Aftertime food production

I had been thinking about the ways of providing enough food for survivors of the PS in the area where winters are long and cold. Since the gardens will be not very productive after the PS (drizzle, gloom, high winds) it seems to me that preserving of what we will be able to grow is the most important issue.
