Capsizing Ships might become the norm.

In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

A cargo vessel ran aground in Egypt’s Suez Canal on Monday, a canal services firm said. It wasn’t immediately clear whether canal traffic was affected.

Leth Agencies said the vessel, MV Glory, ran aground near the city of Qantara, in the Suez Canal province of Ismailia. The firm said canal tugs were trying to refloat the vessel.

Officials had no details on what caused the vessel to run aground. Parts of Egypt, including its northern provinces, experienced a wave of bad weather Sunday.

Satellite tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press showed the Glory in a single-lane stretch of the Suez Canal just south of Port Said on the Mediterranean Sea.

A spokesperson for the Canal Authority declined to comment, saying a statement would be released.

More than 100 people have died in an accident on the river Niger after the boat capsized early on Monday morning.

Eyewitnesses told Al Jazeera the boat was carrying wedding guests who were returning to Kwara State from a ceremony in nearby Niger State, both in central Nigeria.

Al Jazeera correspondent Ahmed Idris reporting from Abuja said the boat hit something in the water and then capsized.

According to Idris, search and rescue operations have been ongoing since Monday.

Police are yet to confirm how many people have died or how many were on board the boat, which was reportedly overloaded.

There have been similar mishaps in the past in the area which is close to the confluence between the rivers Niger and Benue.

British cargo ship SINKS in the North Sea leaving one dead and four missing after colliding with another bulk carrier - as P&O cruise ship Iona joins rescue mission

British-flagged vessel Verity (file image) collided with another cargo ship Polesie at around 5am this morning about 14 miles southwest of the island of Helgoland, Germany 's Central Command for Maritime Emergencies said

A British cargo ship sunk after colliding with another bulk carrier in the North Sea this morning, leaving one dead and four missing - with a P&O cruise ship diverting to join the desperate search for the remaining crew members.

British-flagged vessel Verity collided with another cargo ship Polesie at around 3am this morning about 14 miles southwest of the German island of Helgoland, Germany's Central Command for Maritime Emergencies said.

The 300ft vessel, which was carrying steel from Bremen in Germany to the British port of Immingham, sank following the impact and rescuers have launched a desperate mission to find the missing crew members.

The P&O cruise ship Iona, which left Southampton three days ago for Hamburg, Rotterdam and Bruges in Belgium, has now joined in the search for survivors.

But it has since emerged that the body of a man has been recovered while four crew members are still missing, the German Sea Rescue Society said, adding that two more people had been pulled from the water alive.

Rescuers are still desperately searching for the four remaining crew members - but that search in the 15C North Sea is being hampered by 30mph winds, 10ft waves and poor visibility due to fog.

Passengers on board the Iona have told MailOnline how they were awoken at 5.30am to an emergency announcement from the captain about the accident, with one saying everyone 'was in a state of panic'.

An image from Marine Traffic shows the two cargo ships getting perilously close to each other before colliding

Another passenger, who wishes to be identified only as Mr Johnson, said he saw the P&O cruise ship searching the water with spotlights this morning.

He said: 'We are on holiday but this is a very tragic situation. We cannot comprehend how the people involved in the collision must be feeling along with the family of the people who remain missing or have lost their lives.'

The emergency command said any victims rescued from the water can receive medical care on board the cruise ship Iona.

The German Sea Rescue Society later said one body had been recovered and two people had been rescued. Another four crew members remain missing.

The other ship, the Bahamas-flagged Polesie that had left Hamburg for La Coruna in Spain, remained afloat with 22 people on board after the collision. The Verity was the smaller vessel with a length of almost 300 feet, compared to the Polesie's 625 feet.

The P&O cruise ship Iona, which can hold 5,200 holidaymakers and 1,800 crew, has joined several vessels in the search for Verity, including sea rescue cruisers 'Hermann Marwede' and 'Bernhard Gruben'.

The owner of Verity, Faversham Ships Ltd, is based on the Isle of Wight and said it had no comment on the situation.
