Mystery Booms Heard Across the U.S.

Beginning near midnight on December 4th, unexplained booms and trembling ground was reported in 5 states across the U.S. within a 24-hour span and is still occurring in Georgia.  Extending from Arizona to Rhode Island, this unprecedented and nearly simultaneous series of mystery booms vividly depicts the diagonal stress being asserted across North America.

"Plate movements and spreading Atlantic have positioned the N American continent for what we have long described. A diagonal tear in the New Madrid, a bowing of the continent around San Diego so that Mexico is too far West, an adjustment up the West Coast to relieve the bow. Meanwhile, the entire continent has stress of some kind as this process has already begun but has not manifested in large adjustments, quakes, as yet.

It soon will!"

Columbia County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) director Pam Tucker tells WJBF News Channel 6 there have been several loud booms reported in the county over the last couple of days.

On Tuesday, Tucker tells us there was a distant loud boom reported in the the Pinebrook area off of Hereford Farm Road between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, at 9:07 p.m., a county resident heard a loud rumble and he says his driveway is now lifted up with cracks in in and the road and sidewalks near his home are now cracked.

Then, Thursday morning at 5:00 a.m., a man and his neighbor both heard a loud boom on the 200 block of Louisville Road.

Tucker tells us officials are looking for the cause of the booms and rumbling.

Arizona (Dec 4) -

Jean Swesey was doing homework with her son in Cottonwood when it happened.

"It was a whole series of booms," Swesey said. "Up to six or seven. It was fast, it went loud. We were quiet and then my daughter down the hall screams really loud, ‘Did you hear that?' I sat there for a second and I heard another set."

Swesey wasn't alone. Residents in communities in and around Verde Valley and as far as Flagstaff called 911 or their police and fire departments to report the strange booming sounds.

"It sounded like thunder, but underground," Swesey said. "Like muffled thunder. And all the dogs in the neighborhood, all of them that were outside all started barking at once."

CBS 5 News first received reports of the explosion-like noises shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday and began checking with law enforcement and government sources. The U.S. Geological Survey reports no significant earthquake activity in Arizona that could have created the booms.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office had deputies in the area who either heard it or tried to respond to resident calls. They found nothing.

The Sedona Fire District dispatched a crew to check a report of a strange odor, but that was unfounded and may not be related to the sounds.

The Camp Verde Marshal also received a number of phone calls about the booms. Officers found no evidence of any explosions.

But the Verde Valley contains large expanses of uninhabited land. "Maybe when the light comes back they'll find something," said Gary Johnson of Sedona Fire.

Swesey sure hopes so. "It was just, ‘boom-boom-boom-boom-boom all over the Verde Valley."

Texas (Dec 4)

“We started getting calls at 3:09 p.m. (Tuesday),” said Eric Meyers, Navarro County Emergency Coordinator. “The first calls were north of Corsicana in the Hickory Hollow area with two separate residents out there reporting unusual tremors being felt along with a rumbling type of noise.”

“About two hours later, approximately five o’clock, there were additional reports in the same area of heavier tremors, the same vicinity, the same residents,” Meyers said. Another report came from the western part of the county, near Navarro Mills.

After the second round of reports, Meyers posted it on Facebook and suddenly there were more reports, but coming from all over, including Streetman, Purdon, Pursley and Dawson. Some of the reports came from as far away as Freestone and Limestone counties. The line runs about 50 to 60 miles long, and the tremors didn’t act like any other thing except perhaps earthquake booms, which are shallow sometimes undetectable tremors similar to what’s been happening locally.

“This is an unexplained event likely of a natural origin,” Meyers said. “We can’t come up with a point of origin or a cause or explanation of why this is happening.”

“We were trying to determine what was going on, any type of military exercises at a higher level than locally, we worked on this throughout the night and we eliminated everything we could think of and continued to do some through today,” Meyers said.

“We went through the process of elimination on what it could be and ruled out all these different things,” he said. “Whatever it was hasn’t occurred since 4 a.m. Wednesday. It’s unusual, to say the least.”

Alabama (Dec 4) -

At approximately midnight around Gentilly Mobile Home Park, a mysterious loud bang was heard.

Phone calls to The Plainsman office suggested that the bang was heard over a far larger radius than Gentilly Park.

Residents around the area do not seem to believe the sound was a gunshot or fireworks, as the sound was described as far too loud.

Capt. Tom Stofer of the Auburn Police Department said the department received a call about the noise, but after sending officers out to the area could not find a source or evidence of damage.

"We were really never able to indicate where the sound came from," Stofer said. "As far as we know, nothing was reported afterward as being damaged."

Stofer could not offer any possibilities of what caused the sound.

"The source of the noise or sound is really unknown at this time," Stofer said.

More information will be released as it becomes available.

Rhode Island (Dec 4)

Just before midnight on Monday, reports of a loud boom flooded police stations and social media sites alike.

Sources from the Warwick Police Department said they received nearly 100 phone calls reporting a loud noise that some thought was an explosion. Some residents called to say it shook their homes.

On the other side of Narragansett Bay in Barrington, residents also reported the noise, and a few said a flash of light accompanied it.

The calls prompted an initial police and fire search of the areas, and then marine crews took to the waters between Conimicut and Bullocks Point to search for the source of the sound. Senior Chief Jamey Kinney, from the southeast sector of the Unite States Coast Guard, said one of their boats from Castle Hill joined four other local boats to comb Narragansett.

Initially, the Coast Guard made calls to T.F. Green to see if they had any missing planes, but the FAA confirmed all was status quo. They also reached out to National Grid to see if any transformers had exploded, but they, too, confirmed all was well. The Coast Guard then tossed around the idea that the noise could have been a vessel in distress, but Kinney said their foray into the waters was more as a precautionary measure.

“It’s better to respond earlier,” said Kinney.

But there was no vessel, and after combing the waters for an hour and 50 minutes the Coast Guard returned their team to shore empty-handed.

To add to the mystery, residents further reported a low, droning, humming noise coming from the water that began about an hour or so after the initial boom was heard, about the same time crews took to the water to comb for a source.

Some on social media said the hum sounded like a distress signal, while others said it didn’t sound like anything they’d heard coming from the bay before. One person said it sounded like it could be a tugboat. But Kinney said the source of the hum is just as mysterious as whatever caused the initial boom.

Locally, reports of the boom came from local neighborhoods like Buttonwoods, Hoxsie, Conimicut, Lakewood, Edgewood, Warwick Neck, Gaspee and Governor Francis Farms. Other media outlets have reported that the noise was heard as far away as Somerset, Mass. Yet, there were still some residents of those communities that missed the boom altogether.

Though Kinney said, “strange stuff happens all the time,” he has never heard of mysterious boom like this in this area.

The reports of booms in multiple U.S. locations is now being featured in mainstream news...

More Loud Booms Reported In Georgia, Other U.S. Cities (Dec 7) -

Columbia County officials say that more people reported hearing mysterious booms over the last few days. Some people said the blasts were so loud that they were awakened from sleep. Local experts still don't know what the cause is, but now the reports aren't limited to just Columbia County.

Early this week, reports starting flooding into the Columbia County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) about loud booms in the area.

"Appling, Harlem is the typical area we are looking at here. Of loud booms, rumbling. Now we're hearing about pictures being moved on walls," says Pam Tucker, who is the director of the Columbia County EMA

A man who lives on Louisville Road, near Grovetown, says he also heard the mysterious booms. He wouldn't speak to us on camera, but he told us the blast shook his house early Tuesday morning. He says when he walked outside, his driveway had new cracks in it. Since he lives near a rock quarry, he figured that's what it was.

"We have already checked and our seismologist says that there is no activity on any of our equipment, as far as earthquakes. We've already called all the rock quarries, there was no blasting during any of those times," says Tucker.

Friday afternoon, Tucker says she may have found a lead on what the cause of the booms could be. In a YouTube video, people are shooting at a device called an Earth Shaker. It's full of gun powder and when it explodes, it's apparently powerful enough to shake the ground. But this week there have also been other reports of loud booms in other cities, some in Arizona, Rhode Island, Alabama, and Texas. Could there be another explanation?

Tucker says, "I'm concerned because we do have a lot of credible people who are telling me these things. Law enforcement, fire, county employees, citizens, all of who are credible because they are people I know, people who go through our training. You don't have clusters of people that are all telling you the same thing and it's not happening. Something is making those loud booms, what it is, I don't know."

We were contacted Friday morning from a newspaper reporter in central Arizona who saw Thursday's posting about the Columbia County story on WJBF.com. The reporter tells us there were similar occurrances there during the same timeframe as the occurrances in Columbia County. Read that reporter's online story here.

We have also found other online stories similar to Columbia County's occurrances. Click the links below to read those stories:

Mystery Boom Reported in Trenton, Michigan (Dec 7) -
    http://trenton-grosseile.patch.com/articles/did-you-hear-a-loud-boo...

Local police have not identified the origin of a loud boom reportedly heard at about 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Trenton, Brownstown and Woodhaven police have received several reports about the loud noise. Several readers also reported hearing the boom on the Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch Facebook page.

Officers from all three local police departments said they were not able to identify the source of the boom at about 1 p.m. Friday.

Woodhaven police said reports were made about a loud boom that came from the area of King Road and Gudith Road. Patch readers reported the boom came from a similar area near King Road and Telegraph Road.

A representative of DTE Energy said the boom was not a gas related issue.

"If we had any major malfunctions that would have resulted in a sound like that -- I would know about it," said John Austerberry, media representative for DTE Energy.

Mystery booms reported by Highland, Michigan residents on Nov 29.
Highland Residents Report Hearing Loud Explosions -

Several residents have inquired about two loud explosion sounds that happened Thursday night. Officials with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Substation said they received calls and investigated the area, but did not find the source of the booms.

Did you hear two loud booms Thursday night along Duck Lake Road near Wardlow? You're not alone. Several Highland residents have reported hearing the same sounds Thursday at 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Det. Jim Bowie with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Substation in Highland said the women that clean the station reported hearing the booms, and that there was at least one call last night following the sounds.

"We had a patrol go out and respond, they said they talked to several neighbors who all heard the noise, but no one could pinpoint where the noise came from and no one saw anything," Bowie said.

The deputies checked the area near Seven Harbors, where the caller lives, and the areas along Duck Lake Road but did not find anything that would have given off that kind of sound.

Leah McPhearson, who lives in the area, said her entire neighborhood off Wardlow heard the sounds, "it shook our house and woke people up."

Some residents on the White Lake-Highland Patch Facebook page said the noises reminded them of a home explosion that happened in Highland in the early 1980's.

"Last time that happened a friends house had blown up," Kathleen Culpert Kirchner, said. " It was in Highland years ago. (We) thought a car hit our house. They lived over a mile away too."

Loud, shaking booms reported across the U.S. again on December 20 (thinly veiled explanations included).

    South Carolina

The source of the loud boom and shaking is unclear, but lots of people felt it.

WMBF News viewers started reporting what they heard to a loud, shaking boom around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. When asked, many said it was felt across Horry County, but even more in those same locations say they felt and heard nothing.

WMBF News is still looking for the source of the disturbance as our fans present ideas of their own.

First responders in Horry County have received a lot of the same calls and could not provide an explanation for those reports.

    Virginia

Many residents in Prince William County reported hearing booming and rumbling sounds on Thursday.

The noise is the result of some explosive munitions training at the Marine Corps base in Quantico.

The training will continue until 5 p.m. Thursday, and will resume Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The training has been going on for most of the week, but overcast skies can increase noise and vibrations.

    California

Calls poured into our KSBY newsroom and to local law enforcement Thursday morning after several loud bangs were heard and felt up and down the Central Coast. Many people also reported feeling shaking.

According to John Haire, chief of media relations for Edwards Air Force Base, the rumbling you may have felt was caused by an F-22 Raptor fighter jet.

"I heard the doors in my house banging and the windows were shattering," said one Pismo Beach resident.

"For the most part, everybody was reporting the same thing: that it had felt like an earthquake," said Jake Miller of the Pismo Beach Police Department, "They had heard a sound, but nothing was coming out regarding any earthquake activity in the area."

That's because the sound came from an F-22 Raptor fighter jet using a testing range about 50 miles west of the Vandenberg Air Force Base coastline.

"It's what we call a sonic boom," said David Oppenheimer of the U.S. Geological Survey.

The sound is produced when an object breaks the sound barrier. Shock waves are formed by the air that can't get out of the way of the object fast enough, forming a pressure wave. We perceive that pressure wave as sound.

According to Haire, Edwards Air Force Base conducts these types of operations year-round but today's atmospheric conditions allowed the boom to be heard and felt all along the Central Coast.

The shaking could be felt as far south as Lompoc and as far north as San Simeon. There are even reports of folks feeling the rumbling as far inland as Bakersfield.

Mystery booms heard near Columbia and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Source of Loud Boom in Red Bank Remains a Mystery (Jan 3)

Residents of Red Bank in Lexington County appear to have gotten a loud awakening Thursday morning as multiple reports indicate a loud booming noise in the area.

WIS News 10 viewers poured onto our Facebook page this morning to report the sound.

"What was the horrific boom in the Redbank area," asked Lisa Russell Fields. "People are saying it sounded like a plane crash or explosion."

"I also heard the "big boom" this morning. So did a lot of other people, it sounds like a close cannon or something and will shake the whole building/house," said Jennifer Lee Stokes Kleine.

"Does anyone have a concrete explanation for the loud boom that shook houses in Lexington County around the Redbank/YMCA/Old Barnwell Road area this morning around 8:30 a.m.," said Mary Frances Henry Bell.

So, what was it? The Lexington County Sheriff's Department doesn't know either.

"Law enforcement officers and public safety personnel have been unable so far to determine the source of the noise," said Sheriff's Department spokesman Maj. John Allard. "No explosions have been reported."

A similarly loud explosive noise happened last year in the South Congaree portion of Lexington County.

Residents reported then being woken up to the boom around 8 a.m. on a Sunday. Seismographs at the University of South Carolina even measured something in the area.

However, there was never any cause determined for that loud noise either.

Mystery Booms Near Anchorage Alaska (Jan 3)

Southcentral Alaska authorities didn’t have any immediate cause for a loud booming noise heard Thursday night and reported by Channel 2 viewers, but seemed to rule out sonic booms from aircraft in responses Friday.

Reports of the sounds were posted on Channel 2’s Facebook page Thursday evening by people ranging from Eagle River to the Mat-Su Valley. Some reports placed the phenomenon between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday, with Channel 2's Late Edition airing a brief update on the reports. Viewers' descriptions of the sound varied, but those who heard it generally agreed that it was a strong and persistent noise.

“I live in Peters Creek and I heard several loud noises outside and then muted the television,” Channel 2 viewer Rachel Lee wrote. “After about a minute of silence, there was a rumble and my chandelier started to shake. I thought it might have been an earthquake but I looked online and there weren't any listed at that time; it was 8:05 p.m.”

“About the only thing I can compare it to is someone going down a dirt road really fast,” viewer Deb Spaulding wrote. “(I)t was that sort of rumble.”

“I was in the garage and I heard it. It (lasted) for a while,” wrote viewer Michelle Thomas Hanks. “At first I thought it was the wind until I stepped outside… My (neighbor’s kids) looked for what was making that loud noise and they could not see anything just kept hearing the loud noise.”

John Pennell, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson’s chief of media operations, says the base wasn’t flying any of its supersonic fighter jets capable of causing sonic booms Thursday night, with only subsonic C-17 Globemaster III transports flying until 9:30 p.m.

“Although they are loud, I don’t think anybody’s going to mistake them for a sonic boom,” Pennell said.

Val Jokela, a Federal Aviation Administration community-affairs representative in Anchorage, says the FAA’s regional operations center received no noise complaints overnight.

Law enforcement agencies were similarly stymied by the reports, with Anchorage Police Department spokesperson Dani Myren saying no noise complaints were listed for Thursday or Friday. Dispatchers on duty overnight didn’t relay any reports of the booms to the next shift, which came on duty at 7 a.m.

Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Megan Peters says troopers also had no noise complaints from the region, with AST dispatchers also not relaying any updates during a 6 a.m. shift change.

“There wasn’t anything there big enough for them to pass on or be told about,” Peters said.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory had no reports Friday on the noise itself or any volcanic activity that may have caused it. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center’s latest listed earthquake was a magnitude 4.6 temblor on Dec. 24, centered 40 miles northwest of Valdez.

The National Weather Service forecast office in Anchorage also didn’t have any possible causes, saying there was some shower activity in the area Thursday but nothing more severe in terms of weather conditions.

With no immediate answers on the matter Lee, the Peters Creek viewer, echoed the confusion of many people about the source of the noise.

“It's strange no one knows what caused it,” Lee wrote.

Mystery Boom in Missouri (Jan 7)

Many Tri-Staters were jolted out of bed late Monday night.....by something.  But as of mid-morning on Tuesday, that something remains a mystery.

Just before midnight, Evansville Central Dispatch began receiving 911 calls from people who say they heard what sounded like a loud explosion.  Some say their homes even shook. However, officers investigating along the northeast part of the city say they found nothing out of the ordinary.

Similar reports were made to Eyewitness News, not just from Evansville, but Newburgh, Chandler and Boonville.

Vectren officials say the boom did not come from a blown transformer.  Evansville Regional Airport officials say they had no reports of military aircraft in the area at the time.

Mystery Booms Heard in Indiana (Jan 7)

Loud booms were heard by many overnight and so far explained by none.

It turns out, the booms were heard not just here, but across the county.

The Vanderburgh Sheriff tells 14 News that it was around the area near Green River and Lynch where they received most of these calls about this strange boom.

It happened yesterday evening, and crews investigated, but authorities and people who heard it are still scratching their heads.

"The sound was like a war bomb," Stacy Lowery said.

Lowery who lives on Old Coal Mine Road in Newburgh had just put her kids to bed and was sitting on the couch when she heard it.

"A huge explosion, like definitely knew it wasn't a firecracker going off. I've never heard anything like it, very disturbing," Lowery said.

    Lowery wasn't the only one.

Evansville Dispatch got several calls between 9:30 and 11 Monday night reporting an explosion.

"We obviously dispatched cars. I believe the EFD dispatched crews, the EPD. At the end of the day, we're not able to find anything," Sheriff Eric Williams said.

Crews scoured the area, but didn't find anything.

"It had to be something a little bit different than the typical explosion," Sheriff Williams said.

    But what?

It wasn't an earthquake. The USGS doesn't have reports of any activity in our area.

Some people have suggested a nearby mine was firing off explosions. But when we called Vigo, which is opening a mine near Boonville, they said their permit does not allow them to blast from dusk until dawn.

The Air Force says it wasn't performing any military drills, either.

Authorities say, at least for now, it will remain a mystery.

"We're going to write it off as the unexplained at this point until somebody gives us an explanation," Sheriff Williams said.

Interestingly, there have been reports of unexplained booms from Arizona to Rhode Island. No one has been able to explain them.

More cross-country mystery booms heard in California, Utah and Massachusetts on Jan 7, as were those heard in Indiana and Missouri (reported yesterday in the previous post).

    Hollywood, California -

The loud explosion that jolted North Hollywood on Tuesday night remained a mystery the next morning, authorities said.

An officer at the Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood station said police searched the area for a half an hour Tuesday night but had no luck in determining what caused the sound. The officer said police received numerous calls about the noise.

At about 9:30 p.m., numerous people began tweeting about a loud explosion. Some thought it had come from a North Hollywood Metro station; others reported hearing an explosion in Studio City.

"Mysterious explosion a few minutes ago. What's going on? #LA" tweeted @ThatVitalSpark.

"Seriously, any leads what the hell this boom was in North Hollywood? Im shook up a bit" tweeted @RajRawal37.

A Reddit user posed the question: "What just blew up in North Hollywood?"

    Salt Lake City, Utah

Hundreds of people from Weber County to Utah County, and some as far north as Rock Springs, Wyoming reported that they felt shaking or heard loud booms Tuesday night around 9 p.m.

The FOX 13 Newsroom received several calls from concerned citizens about the phenomena shortly after 9 p.m., but the cause remains a mystery.

Experts at the seismology department at the University of Utah confirmed there was seismic activity measured just behind the Capitol building.

Representatives for the University of Utah’s Seismograph stations said there was not an earthquake, ATK said they were not conducting any rocket tests, the Utah National Guard said they were not conducting any weapons or artillery training and Hill Air Force Base said they did not have any planes in the air after 6 p.m.

A map of earthquakes over the last day shows no activity in Northern Utah, or anywhere in the state. The closest quake was a relatively small 2.6 magnitude near Bishop, Calif., more than 500 miles from Salt Lake City.

“We don’t really know what this was. We don’t have the operational capability to even locate something like this, so we can’t say where it came from. We just don’t know,” Whidden said.

People in Wyoming, Indiana, Oklahoma and California also reported hearing a boom similar to what was heard in Utah.

    Salem, Massachusetts

Salem and Marblehead police officers searched the area of Ocean Avenue early Saturday morning for evidence of what could have caused the large boom that prompted residents across the area to call 911.

According to Sunday morning's Salem police log, At 1:34 a.m., police received multiple calls regarding a "loud bang" on Ocean Avenue. They were unable to locate the source.

Many of our readers in Marblehead also reported hearing the sound, which has some town residents wondering whether or not it is coming from the harbor.

We even received word of the noise on our Salem Patch Facebook page.

"Anybody know what the hell that big boom cannon-like noise was I just heard?? 1:30 a.m., near Salem State?"
"What was the loud explosion sound with a flash near Salem State between 1:30 and 2:00 AM??? It shook my house!"

Ongoing Mystery Booms in South Carolina (Jan 9)

For the past two weeks, people living in the Red Bank area of Lexington County have reported hearing booms late at night or early in the morning.

The WIS newsroom has received a dozen or so reports of booms heard in the neighborhood.

Every so often the peace of Lexington County is shattered by what neighbors describe as an explosion.  Sometimes it rattles the windows.

The most recent was Sunday evening. The Lexington County Sheriff's Department had widespread reports of a loud boom from West Columbia to Red Bank.

It's the hot topic on the Red Bank Happenings Facebook page.

We thought it could've been a sonic boom, but the FAA and the military both say negative on that one.

Others think it could've been Tannerite, explosive targets used on gun ranges.  But given the widespread reports, probably not.

USC seismologists say they have no record of any activity in the area, making the series of sounds far more mysterious.

We did get some emails about a metal recycler in the area, but that was ruled out as well.

So for now, the mystery of the Red Bank booms remains unsolved.

Mystery Booms and Bright Flashes West of Boston, Massachusetts (Jan 9)

Mysterious explosion noises woke Ball Square residents early Wednesday morning, cause unknown.

The noises, described as loud bangs or explosions, woke residents at around 4 a.m. Wednesday. Police, fire and NSTAR officials don't know what it was.

One resident who contacted Somerville Patch described them as a "terrifically loud series of four bangs" and said the concussions set off a car alarm. They sounded nothing like gunshots, the resident said, but rather like "really big flash-bang fireworks rockets."

On Twitter, @mtrem2 said the bangs were associated with a flash and shockwave, and @slippery85 described four "loud explosions."

They weren't the only ones to hear the noises. Deputy Chief Charles Breen of the Somerville Fire Department said he personally heard the bangs.

Thomas Champion, a spokesperson for the city, said in an email that Somerville's 311 system received four calls about the noises, but "there were a number of other calls reporting the noise" that went to 911 and the police department's non-emergency line.

According to Champion, people reported the noises as coming from the area around Willow Avenue, Foskett Street, Kidder Avenue, Lowden Avenue and Bay State Avenue, all in a neighborhood close to the Brown School. There was one outlier: Someone reported hearing the noises around Forster Street, almost a mile away in Winter Hill.

In addition to the noises, "Some callers apparently also said they saw an accompanying bright white flash," Champion said.

The fire department dispatched Engine 6 to the area, thinking there might have been a transformer explosion, but "we came up with nothing on our end," said Breen.

The Somerville Police Department sent four units to investigate, and the city also called NSTAR, according to Champion.

"No cause was identified," he wrote.

Chico Police: Unknown What was the Source of Reported Explosions

    POSTED: 11:57 AM Jan 13 2013
On Sunday Chico Police said it's unknown what was the source of the reported explosions on Saturday night.

Police said they were flooded with 911 calls round 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night with reports of loud explosions.

They said some of the calls came from 8th Avenue and Ivy as well as other locations.

Chico Police as well as the Chico Fire Department investigated but were unable to locate any clues as to what caused the explosions.

On Sunday Police said they have no leads to investigate the incident further.

    Comments:

Last night around 10pm, I was watching tv with the lights off in the house. Suddenly a green flash that looked like it came from my backyard was followed by the sound of a blast. I got up and went out back to see if something had happened but couldn't see anything. Would really like to know what it was. Sounded like a large cherry bomb

We were outside and heard a "sonic boom" no clue what it was....

That was no cherry bomb, and certainly not a sonic boom. It WAS, however, a VERY large explosion! I'm on Citrus, and had friends as far away as River Road say they had heard it. I thought maybe a meth lab exploded, or a propane tank.

It was loud enough to make the windows rattle, and made me jump about a foot off my chair!

We sure heard it! We're over by the Flyers station.

    New ZetTalk, Jan 19, 2013 Q and A

    Thank you. :)

    http://easthamptonstar.com/?q=News/2013117/%E2%80%98Explosions%E2%8...

‘Explosions’ Out East? I was wondering if there is something more happening in Montauk, East Hampton as this seems a bit strange.  East Hampton is a peninsula bordered on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, to the east by Block Island Sound and to the north by Gardiners Bay, Napeague Bay and Fort Pond Bay.
I'm not sure if it falls under the Booms category on the ning
but the article says "Blasts ‘occur without warning and leave no evidence."  and have been going on for more than a year although not during the summer. (Why)  I recognize that the bow stretch is pulling tighter everyday with adjustments in between.  Surely if this were a manmade occurence there would be evidence I would think.  Is something more happening that the Zetas can share with us?
    [and from another]
    http://easthamptonstar.com/?q=News/2013117/%E2%80%98Explosions%E2%8...
January 17, 2013.  The sound of explosions started over a year ago, with what seemed to be professional-grade fireworks. Now the culprits seem to have moved on to pipe bombs, but the source of the alarming noises besieging remains a mystery. According to East Hampton Town police, the apparent explosives have been set off in a number of areas of the hamlet, including Second House Road, the golf course at the Montauk Downs State Park, West Lake Drive, and several beaches. The explosives occur without warning and leave no evidence.  The noises sound like a house exploding.

The blasts usually occur at night around 10 pm, but there have been a few during the day. In summer, the noises stopped.  Some have speculated that the noises are coming from the Long Island Power Authority’s substation on Industrial Road. If a piece of equipment failed it would make a loud popping sound and would also cause electrical outages, none of which have been reported. Police have found no evidence, such as burn marks or burned mailboxes.

    SOZT
Close examination of the rock strata holding East Hampton shows that the strata is different than the strata under the rest of New York State. The bowing of the N American continent, and the occasional release of tension along the St Lawrence Seaway when that jerks open to some degree, create a back and forth action along the rock strata edges. Rock strata of a homogeneous nature tend to bond, and resist ripping. But along the borders where different strata meet, this tight bond is missing. This is allowing the Hamptons to hear snapping rock now and then, the booms which are so familiar in many parts of the globe. Why does this ease in the Summer? Heat swells rock and creates a tighter hold along the boundary, rock fingers having more friction and thus preventing motion.
    EOZT

    Prior ZT: http://www.zetatalk.com/info/tinfx050.htm
These matters are related to the rock strata, which bonds or breaks, as we have stated. There is a natural break in the rock strata holding Ohio, along the Ohio River and into its headwaters, as can be seen. Why should Chicago be affected? There is a natural break in the rock strata between the New Madrid and Chicago also, a weakness, which will rupture with the New Madrid.

Ongoing Reports of Loud Booms Rattle Oklahoma Residents, Baffle Authorities (Jan 21) -

A series of loud booms heard in and around Elk City are a mystery to authorities.

The latest booms were heard Monday afternoon just before the Martin Luther King Jr. Day march, which began at Ackley Park.

A Daily Elk Citian reporter who heard the sounds said it came from east of the park, in a set of three and each about 10 minutes apart.

Elk City Fire Chief Rick Shelton has heard reports of it over several days, but is still unsure of what it could be.

"It kind of concerns people. It's loud enough it shakes windows on houses," Shelton said.

Mystery 'Loud Booms' Felt, Heard Over South Carolina (Feb 20)

Multiple reports of loud booms in several Midlands neighborhoods beginning around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.

We heard from worried residents in Sumter, Wedgefield, Manning, and Bishopville. The noise was so loud that windows rattled and homes shook.

Reports also came out of Summerton, Eastover, Mayesville, Lexington, Lugoff, Camden and Sandy Run.

We made several calls to try and find out what caused the sounds, and the State Emergency Management Agency says it wasn't an earthquake.

Shaw Air Force Base hasn't reported any unusual flying activity and Lynn Douglas with the Columbia Airport says she knows of no sonic booms in the Midlands on Wednesday.

Mystery Booms Near San Francisco (Feb 21)

Alameda police have received reports of "kaboom!" noises on the Island over the past few days, but the source of the loud sounds remains a mystery.

An Alameda Police Department dispatcher told Patch that the APD has received three reports of booming noises since Monday but has not been able to find the cause of the noises.

Officials at the Coast Guard installation on Government Island also said they don't know the source of the noises. The Coast Guard normally alerts Alameda police to any scheduled military ceremonies with cannon fire — a sound that's prompted questions about noise from Alamedans in the past.

About two dozen readers reported hearing — or hearing about — the "kabooms," and reports came from several areas of Alameda, from Bay Farm Island to the West End.

"So what was that big Kaboom that kaboomed around 4:40 yesterday?"

"I heard it, too! Sounded way bigger than a firework...."

Mysterious Ongoing  'Explosion' Sounds Alarm Residents in Flint, Michigan (Mar 3)

Something mysterious is spooking residents on the eastern edge of the city.

It comes unannounced. It shakes the walls and the floors and freaks out the pets.

People who have experienced it all describe it the same way.

"Explosions," said Juan Lara, a 67-year-old man who lives near Center Road and Davison Road.

Lara and others said it's been happening off and on for about a year. It usually happens in the afternoon, maybe once every few weeks. But, lately, it's more frequent.

"(It's) loud," Lara added. "I don't know where they're coming from."

    Nobody does.

Not the neighbors, not the fire department, not the power company.

"I haven't heard anything like that," said John Babb, Flint Fire Department battalion fire chief.

Fire crews haven't responded to anything that matches what residents are describing, Babb said. And if anything was blowing up, firefighters would be out there.

He wondered if it was maybe a power transformer or some activity under a manhole.

If either were the case, Consumers Energy would know, Babb said.

    They didn't.

"We’re not aware anything on our system," said Dan Bishop, a Consumers spokesman.

Whatever it is, Sheila Kopek knows she's not imagining it.

"It shakes you, you feel it," said Kopek, 34.

She's been hearing it "at least one every couple weeks" since the summertime. She and her husband thought they were fireworks at first.

It shakes the walls in their home. It comes up from the earth like a crack of thunder, except at a lower pitch, she said.
Hester_strange noises Sheila Kopek, 34, has experienced the explosion-type noise that she says shake her home in Flint.

"It's loud enough that it will make you jump," Kopek said. "It's weird."

Big Booms Still Startling Florida Residents (Mar 3)

Many heard "sonic boom" like noises and the Collier County Sheriff's Office was flooded with emergency calls on Sunday.

Hysler had never heard anything like it.

"I was outback with my wife, sitting in the lanai and then all of a sudden, boom!" Hysler said.

These boom-like noises are the talk of the town—ones that just about everyone heard on Sunday.

"I kind of heard a slight rumble, then I heard a louder rumble and the windows started to shake" said Bill D'Antuono of Naples.

"It was like an explosion almost, off to the distance. I didn't know what it was" said Dylan Glass of North Naples.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office says they received dozens of phone calls around 11:00 a.m.—one after another.

"I live on 3rd Avenue Southwest and 15 minutes ago there was a huge explosion. It like shook our sliders and shook part of our house," said one caller.

"Two loud booms we heard coming southwest of Marco Island, is that sonic booms or is someone blasting?" said another.

Less than two weeks ago, the Naval Air Station in Key West had jets training over the gulf, something that most likely contributed to earth shaking noises then.

NBC2 reached out to representatives at the Air Station in Key West—they said they had no training on Sunday.

Many thought it could've been "blasting" from a nearby developer.

Minto Communities—a company developing the new Isles of Collier Preserve in East Naples has a permit—but officials there say they only blast during the week.

"I even heard two blasts living down on Marco Island on Sunday, and those have nothing to do with anything we're doing in Naples" said William Bullock, Vice President of Minto Communities.

With both jet training and blasting out of the question, Sunday's earth-rattling noise remains a mystery for now.

Mystery Boom Rocks Kentucky (Mar 4)

Several residents report hearing a loud boom just before 10:00 p.m. Monday.

KSP said they dispatched units to the area, but as of 11:55 p.m. Monday nothing had been found.

Kentucky State Police said they received several phone calls, and WBKO received several Facebook and Twitter messages, saying a loud boom had rocked the Plano/Alvaton area around 9:55 p.m. Monday.

KSP said they dispatched units to the area, but as of 11:55 p.m. Monday nothing had been found.

WCSO said they received some calls, too, but that KSP was handling it. They said no WCSO units responded.

Mysterious Loud Noises Concern North Carolina Residents (Mar 6)

911 calls about incredibly loud "BOOMS" have been reported in Bamberg County, Newberry County and Rutherford County North Carolina.

Two nights in a row Devin Webster has heard a mysterious booming sound at his home in Chesnee.

"It rattled the room a little bit and the windows," said Webster.

The same noise boomed through Cowpens and at Barbara Lee's home near Gaffney.

"For me, it felt more like it was vibrating the floors," said Lee.

Neighbors tell 7 On Your Side they don't know what's causing the sound or where it is coming from. They say they just hear it at night around 8:00 or 8:30.

"It's like something is colliding together. Just like a car wreck, but not all the crashing," said Webster.

"We are getting several different calls over a wide range of area," said Robert Brackett with Cherokee County 911. "And it's shaking houses in a wide range of areas. We aren't real sure exactly where it's coming from."

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office isn't sure either.

We're told most of the calls are from homes along Highway 11, near the Cowpens National Battlefield. But Sheriff Steve Mueller says there's no blasting there.

Also a grenade company within the county is too far away to be the culprit. And road construction blasting in Rutherford County is just too far away, according to Sheriff Mueller.

For now, county deputies are treating the calls as noise complaints, and checking for the source of the loud sound.

Mysterious Booms Across U.S. Remain Unexplained (Mar 16)

It was about midnight on a night last week when Randy Smith took his dog outside and for the third time this year, heard the mysterious booms.

“Three times in a row I heard it,” Smith said. “It sounds as loud as a sonic boom. Maybe louder. As soon as it goes off, the dog starts growling and gets startled.”

Smith and his father, Laverne Smith, live at 748 Lewiston Rd. (Route 77) in the New York town of Alabama and have been hearing the booms for nearly two years now.

They cannot pinpoint the source of the noise.

“You can’t tell what direction it’s coming from,” Laverne Smith, 76, said. “The last good weather we had I was out near the shed and heard it.”

Last year they heard the booms about 10 times, sometimes during the day and sometimes at night.

“It seems to be just around here,” Randy Smith said. “I asked my sister who lives in Alabama Center and she hasn’t heard it.”

It is a phenomena that has sparked curiosity throughout the country for several years now.

The booms, however, have grown more frequent.

In December, people in Rhode Island, Alabama, Georgia, Texas and Oklahoma reported hearing unusual booms and explosions.

Newspaper reports revealed no unusual seismic activity in those regions and all the noises have yet to be explained.

In January, hundreds of people in northern Utah called emergency dispatchers reporting booms and shaking of the earth.

Locally, 911 dispatchers in Chautauqua County were inundated with calls on Jan. 13, all reporting hearing a loud boom that shook houses.

A few days later, on Jan. 16, residents in Gorham, Ontario County, reported a series of booms.

“It was just a loud, explosion-like sound,” Janet Koller told the Canandaigua Messenger Post. “We saw nothing. It was dark by then. It was hard to even tell what direction it came from. It shook the house.”

Ontario County sheriff’s officials said several people called to report the still unexplained booms.

Booms also were reported in Le Roy.

Former Daily News editor Ben Beagle said he was in his living room about 9 p.m. March 9 when he heard “some booms.”

“I thought it was just neighbors, maybe shutting doors or something. Then, about 9:09 p.m., a series of boom-boom-booms that I thought must be thunder.”

He checked the weather radar and all was clear, he said.

Genesee County Senior Dispatcher Gary Diegelman said the county’s 911 system did not receive any reports of booms.

He offered a few possible explanations for booms, at least those heard during the day.

Diegelman said the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms often uses stone quarries in Le Roy and Alabama for training and detonating explosives.

“We’ve had them coming in the past few years and they probably make a good-sized blast,” he said. “At night, it’s possible it’s propane cannons they use on farms to scare away animals.”

Those, however, are usually heard during the spring and early summer when crops are planted are in various stages of growth.

Three farmers contacted this week reported they do not use propane cannons and weren’t aware of any local farmers that do, at least at this time of year.

    So what’s going on?

Dr. Mark Castner, director of Braun-Ruddick Seismograph Station at Canisius College, told WIVB-TV in Buffalo that booms can be associated with an earthquake, quarry blasts, building implosions or sonic booms.

Seismographic records reported no unusual activity, however, and officials at Niagara Falls Air Reserve have had no aircraft flying in the area during the times of the reported booms.

The Smiths live near National Fuel’s Empire Pipeline for natural gas.

    Could that be an explanation?

    No, says spokeswoman Karen Merkel.

“I checked and we have no issues with the pipeline, we’re not doing any testing and we have no reported leaks,” she said. “We have nothing going on but we do want to be aware of it.”

The Smiths have no idea what causes the booms around their house.

“It doesn’t sound like gunfire or an explosion,” Randy Smith, 53, said. “It’s huge and it rattles everything in the house. I’ve looked around for lights or aircraft but I never see anything. I wish I could tell you I’ve seen lights for an aircraft but I can’t.”

Mysterious Boom Heard Across Southern Illinois Has Residents Puzzled (Mar 17)

The source of the noise is unknown and, according to some, has been recurring for the past several weeks.

Loud and mysterious booms are being heard and felt around the region for more than a month.  An official explanation has not been given, leaving residents baffled. Wanting answers, many have turned to their local media.

“The first time I heard it, I waited to hear sirens. I dismissed it assuming I would find out what happened later on the news,” said Lori Wharton Libby. An accident was not to blame for the noise that day nor was anything on the news regarding what she heard.

Libby, who is a secretary for Cornerstone Community Church, started a thread on the WSIL News 3 Facebook wall asking for answers. Her inquiry resulted in more than 200 comments from people who have also heard and felt the noise.

Many have experienced it frequently over the past several weeks.

“We tried to put the facts together,” said Libby. “We knew it wasn’t a gun or cannon. The noise is loud enough to scare our dog under the bed. People from as far east as Harrisburg and north of Mt. Vernon have heard and felt the same noise that I described.”

Further investigation finds these unidentified noises are taking place all over the country. Around the beginning of January people from Utah, Massachusetts, Alaska, Tennessee,  Indiana and Florida have been contacting their local authorities and news media outlets regarding unexplained loud booms.

Southern Illinois and others in the tri-state area began reporting these loud noises as early as January 9.

Unexplained Loud Booms in Michigan & Ohio (Apr 3)
The calls started to flood into the Branch County 911 Center around midnight.  Each one reporting deafening loud booms and everyone believed the boom happened somewhere close.

"We just heard a really loud bang outside our house and me and my kids are really scared, I don't know what it is and now we're afraid to outside," says one caller.

"I didn't see anything but I heard a big boom...it was like a big boom like someone was kicking in the door," says another caller.

It was the talk of the town in Union City Wednesday, everyone with their own theories on what caused it.

"It sounded like a cannon going off is the only way I can describe it, kind of like a thunder boom but it was only the one time," says Michelle Reincke who lives in Union City.

And adding to the mystery, this is not the first time.  One night last may the booms woke people up in Branch County and were heard all the way to Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties.

"It's the same time as last year, we had these loud crashing noises like either an explosion or a sonic boom kind of an earthquake," says Cynthia Shattuck.

There were no earthquakes recorded in the area overnight, the National Guard base in Battle Creek says there were no flights there last night.

Mysterious Booms Reported Near Union Lake, Michigan (Apr 4)

Those in western Branch County who were awake around midnigt Wednesday may have experienced rattling windows and shaking houses.

Local authorities received several calls from residents at Matteson Lake and in areas as far away as Union City reporting a loud noise that sounded like an explosion.

The very loud, strong sonic booms caused 30 to 40 reports to the 911 center according to one dispatcher, some of which were transferred from Calhoun County dispatch.

One woman on Union Lake said the noise was so loud "it was shaking our house." Callers said the sound came from the southwest.

Sandra Batterson of Union City reported, "Basically it knocked me out of my chair. It was real loud and sounded real close."

Michigan State Police and officers from the Branch County Sheriff's Office were sent to the area to check out the reports. No signs of blasts, fire or flames were found.

Another man at Union Lake thought someone was trying to kick in his back door. His wife said, "I heard a big boom."

Several people reported hearing smaller booms earlier before the larger boom.

The calls were similar to reports from the same area in May 2012. There was some speculation sonic booms from military aircraft caused the noise.

The 110th Air National Guard Wing flies small, commercial-type jets from W.K. Kellogg base in Battle Creek, confirmed they had no planes in the air that night. The tower there is not manned at the hour the calls came in.

"There were no planes we know of" under the base's supervision in the area according to regional air traffic control.

Southern Idaho Booms Remain Unexplained (Apr 30)

"It's annoying and I actually do feel like the windows are going to break so I kind of get mad. And it upsets my dogs a lot."

The big question is what is causing these rumbling noises? One theory is that they are simply earthquakes. But residents that have experienced both disagree.

"There was no movement of the ground it was just noise. it was indescribable it was not like anything I've ever heard before and I've been in earthquakes in southern California."

One theory is that they are caused by the bombing and sonic booming from the aircraft that take place at Mountain Home Air Force base do during practice exercises.

Byron Schmidt, Mountain Home Air Force Base chief of air space management says, "We're probably not the culprits that are causing this. The sonic boom is a very quick impulse noise that happens on a millisecond timeframe. The rumblings I heard were longer in duration and really would be hard to attach an aviation perspective to that."

And in terms of the bombing range Pilot Randy Webb says they do not use live explosives during training exercises.

"No explosives, only steel and concrete to replicate other weapons. All the live drops happen in Utah or Las Vegas."

So the mystery continues, and for Twin Falls residents there are still more questions than answers.

When it comes to these rumbling instances Southern Idaho is not alone. This same phenomena has been reported in Florida, Wisconsin, New York and North Carolina. And so far there are no definitive answers in those states as well.

Michigan Mystery Booms Remain Unexplained (May 2)

What residents describe as "loud booms" and "explosions"  remain a mystery.

For a couple months, people living in Mt. Morris and surrounding communties report hearing noises.

Mt. Morris resident, Mary White described it, "it's a huge boom a boom you cannot miss it."

She says it's been happening for several months.

"At random times there are huge explosions in the area somewhere to the point where it shakes my house, the pictures and mirrors rattle on the wall," said White.

Brian menerey lives in Mt. Morris.

He says he has also experienced the unexplainable racket during the daytime hours.

"Definitely not gunshots. They sound more like bombs going off or something dropping that's really heavy like a big dumpster just dropping out of the sky or something," said Mt. Morris resident, Brian Menery.

    It's literally shaking them up.

"Couple of them you do end up feeling the vibration from them some are really big others aren't as big but still pretty big booms out there."

No one knows where the blast is coming from not even authorities.

Flint Police have dismissed the possibility of the noise being a byproduct of training at a secret location.

Lt. Collin Bernie of the Flint bomb squad says they have not activated any explosives at the site since February 26, 2013.

Meanwhile, it's keeping these residents on the edge of their seats waiting for the next big boom.

"Doesn't really bother me but people who are closer aren't liking the shaking rattling and rolling," said Menery.

"You know it would be nice to know why my house is rattling every week," said White.

Mysterious Booms Heard Across Pennsylvania County Remain Unexplained (May 13)
Lots of people heard a blast at about 9 p.m. Monday but nobody so far seems to know what caused the sound, which many described as a “massive explosion” heard from Mercer to Sandy Lake and Grove City.

It was louder than anything I ever heard in my life,” said Mike Lasko, who lives along Lamor Road in East Lackawannock Township. “It made me jump two feet in the air.”

The Greenville teacher was on Spruce Drive in Mercer when the sound erupted.

“Everybody came out of their homes wondering what the heck happened.”

The county’s deputy 911 director, Russ Saylor, would like to know what the loud noise was, too, but admits he’s having little luck in finding out.

Saylor said a friend of his son’s asked him Monday evening if he knew anything about a “loud explosion” in the Mercer area. “I called into work and was told that they had received calls from Grove City, Sandy Lake, East Lackawannock Township, all asking what it was. We dispatched the state police, but they weren’t able to find anything,” Saylor said.

He also said he recalls another similar incident years ago. “I remember Frank (Janetti) going out himself looking for what might have caused it. But he never found anything.”

Janetti is the county’s public safety director.

Saylor wasn’t certain how many calls 911 received Monday night, because one incident report was filed rather a separate report for each call. There were no reports of any damage that he knows of, he said.

Cpl. Ronald Shoup, a state police shift supervisor at the Troop D barracks in Jackson Township, said four troopers looked for signs of fire, smoke or people in distress around Mercer but found nothing out of the ordinary.

Tuesday morning, Lasko said, there was speculation around Mercer that gas drilling operations in Mercer County were somehow linked to the sound.

“Everyone knows about it but no one knows what caused it,” he said of the sound. “It’s a big mystery.”

Gas operations didn’t appear to be involved because there were no reports of any environmental damage, said Gary Clark, communication director at the state Department of Environmental Protection office in Meadville.

“Believe me, if somebody spills a gallon of diesel fuel, I hear about it,” he said.

Across the hall, Gordon Buckley, DEP emergency response manager, said they weren’t aware of any problems in Mercer County.

“We operate a 24-hour telephone number and respond to emergencies,” he said. “There’s nothing on it. We had no report of any explosions.”

That includes Tennessee Gas Pipeline’s pumping station along Greenville Road near Fullingmill Road in Jefferson Township. Its 32-inch buried lines are part of El Paso Corp.’s 60-year-old interstate natural-gas pipeline system.

Cory Masson, an employee of Atlas Energy, said well-tenders from his company called him Monday night to ask about the loud noise.

There was a similar thing about three weeks ago, on a Saturday night, right about the same time,” he said. “But I know it wasn’t any of our wells that blew up. I would have heard about that, if that had been the case,” he said.

County Commissioner Chairman John Lechner, who lives in Hermitage, said he wasn’t aware of the noise and didn’t hear any talk about it Tuesday around the courthouse.

Others suggested “exploding targets,” sold to shooting enthusiasts who like to see and hear something blow up.

The targets, sold in stores and online, are made of explosive materials that can be set off by bullets fired from guns as light as .22 caliber rifles or pistols or high-powered rifles that fire far more powerful ammunition.

After getting nine reports of residents hearing the sound from Lamor Road to Greenville Road along the borders of Jefferson and Coolspring Townships, Jeff Lockard, chief of Jefferson Township police, said his department will try to get to the bottom of the unexplained sound.

I’m not ruling out exploding targets, but this boom was bigger than what they could produce,” he said.

We’ve been on these calls more than once in the last couple of years,” Shoup said.

Some people living on Grayland Avenue near Carytown told CBS 6 they have heard a mysterious boom sound for the past few months.

“It’s like a boom that has an echo to it,” said Thomas Daniel who lives near Grayland Avenue and S. Sheppard Street.

Daniel told CBS 6 news reporter Chelsea Rarrick that he hears the mystery sound periodically, sometimes even a few times a week. He said he first heard it while sitting on his front porch around 2 a.m.

“You think sometimes it’s like a train backing into another train,” said Daniel

Sarah Barrow also lives on Grayland Ave. and heard a boom for the first time this week around 10 or 11 p.m.

“The front right window shook, which made me realize it’s more than just a backfire from a truck on a highway,” she said.

CBS 6 contacted the Richmond Police Department regarding the noise. RPD said they have received a couple of reports regarding the sounds in the area, but can’t confirm what it is since an officer didn’t hear the sound.

“Where is this coming from?” said Daniel.

Unexplained Booms Rattle East Coast Residents (Aug 24)

"The whole beach house shook. It sounded like a very low explosion. There were three booms, each separated by a few seconds. Then, a few minutes later, there was a fourth, softer boom."

Residents around Hampton Roads and in northeastern North Carolina took to social media sites to report that they heard three or four loud booms.

The U.S. Geological Survey received reports from residents who heard the noise which some said was accompanied by shaking and came on the two-year anniversary of the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that was centered near Mineral.

A reader reported via Twitter that he felt “three blast waves” this morning in Sandbridge. Virginia Beach emergency dispatchers said they received one report from someone in the Red Mill area. On Facebook, people reported feeling the rumble or hearing an unexplained noise.

Public affairs officers at Oceana Naval Air Station, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic and Joint Base Langley all said they had no reports of any activity.
