Train derailments

Spain Experiences its Worst Train Accident in 40 Years

An increase in train derailments was one of the first symptoms of the approach of Planet X to become noticeable, being expressed even before Planet X entered the inner solar system in 2003.

Planet X was described as affecting the Earth from afar, like tugging on the edge of a spider web where the effects are felt elsewhere on the web; in this way there has been an increase in earthquakes and unpredictable weather going back years, even before Planet X entered the solar system, due to the increased swirling of the Earth’s core.

It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail.

The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur.

This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift.

In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

    Train derails in Bridgeport

    Posted: Sunday, April 21, 2013 8:00 am | Updated: 10:06 am, Sun Apr 21, 2013.

Bridgeport residents woke to an uncommon site - a derailment on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks going through the community.

William Weibert, a Star-Herald employee, shared photos of the derailment. Weibert said the derailment is near the community's train depot, on the tracks that run along Railway Avenue/Highway 385 in the community. The derailment is just a short distance from the Main Street/Highway 88 crossing in the community.

Weibert lives near the derailment site and estimated it occurred at about 5:30 a.m.

"My mom, Jonilee, heard the derailment," he said. "At first, she thought that it was thunder."

Cheree Fisher, chief deputy with the Morrill County Sheriff's Department, said 15 cars derailed in the accident this morning. The cause of the derailment is under investigation, she said, but no injuries occurred.

The crossing at Main Street/Highway 88 is expected to remain closed throughout the morning as crews bring equipment from Grand Island, Neb., and Cheyenne, Wyo., to remove the cars from the tracks, she said.

Andy Williams, media representative with Burlington Northern Santa Fe said that crews are hoping to have unblocked the crossing by this afternoon and the derailed cars removed from the track by this evening. Williams said there were a total of 124 cars in the southbound coal train.

Weibert said crews were working at the Main Street/Highway 88 crossing just the day before.

TOGO, Sask. — Eleven people on a VIA Rail train are safe after a derailment in eastern Saskatchewan that appears to have been caused by water.

Via spokesman Jacques Gagnon said the train went over a section of track that had been washed out Sunday evening near Togo.

“Water basically … was undermining the track and it caused a slight derailment,” said Gagnon.

“I’ll characterize it as a slight derailment because no cars were [tipped over], they were still upright. There were no locomotives sideways or passenger cars sideways.”

The train was heading to Churchill, Man., from Winnipeg when the derailment happened.

The RCMP said in a news release that two engines and one car came off of the tracks. The Transportation Safety Board, however, said two coach cars derailed.

    Train derails outside Helena

Crews use heavy equipment to help stabilize and begin clean up of a multi-track derailment near Austin Road Tuesday morning. No one was hurt during the accident and the cause is still under investigation.

AUSTIN — A freight train derailed on the outskirts of town early Tuesday morning, scattering train cars down an embankment and on top of one another like pickup sticks.

No one was injured in the accident, but the Montana Rail Link line was expected to be out of commission all day, halting train traffic through Helena.

Linda Frost, a spokesperson for MRL, said they received word of the derailment, 13 miles west of Helena, at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday. Thirteen empty cars derailed and another 12 cars parked on a siding — including three that contained corrosive material known as Piperidine — were damaged. Frost said the cars carrying the Piperidine were intact and nothing was released from them. The rest of the cars on the siding were carrying a variety of commodities.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but Frost said it appears that the 13 empty rail cars were eastbound and hit the parked cars when passing them. The accident occurred on a curve in the rail line.

Tuesday morning, at least two of the empty rail cars lay on their sides down a steep embankment, with the cover torn off of one. Others remained on the tracks, with one double-decker precariously perched at enough of an angle, leaning toward Austin Road. Crews used an excavator’s claw like a large hand to hold it in place.

“It’s a complicated situation,” Frost said. “A heavy equipment company has arrived on the site and will begin moving cars away from the track.”

She noted that they’re holding back rail traffic along the route until the tracks are cleared. Frost anticipated reopening the tracks Tuesday evening.

Gus Melonas, a spokesman for BNSF, said they were only minimally impacted by the derailment.

“At this point, BNSF has been able to weather the storm,” he said. “Fortunately, we have the Hi-Line operation, which is able to accommodate additional traffic. So we’re repositioning and rerouting over the Hi-Line route and will continue to do so until the derailment is cleaned up.”

More freight delays as another train derails

    Posted Wed May 1, 2013 12:29pm AEST

Tasmania's southern railway line is expected to be closed for most of the day after a train derailed early this morning.

The train was heading to Burnie when it derailed near Colebrook about 3:30am.

Six wagons came off the track, but TasRail says there has been no damage to the freight and no-one was injured.

Crews are working to repair the line but it is expected to stay closed until later today.

It is the sixth train derailment this year.

TasRail's chief executive Damian White says major track upgrades are scheduled to be completed by September which should minimise future derailments.

He says TasRail is working with customers on an alternate freight solution while the track is repaired.

    SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A train has derailed on the Saginaw-Saginaw Township line and several streets are blocked as a result.

Until further notice, Superior, Wheeler and Maple streets are blocked due to the derailed train. Wheel is a major thoroughfare. The site looks to be just southeast of the Saginaw Country Club. The street that runs parallel to the crash scene is Burrows.

The derailment happened late Wednesday afternoon. The tracks in that area run east to west.

Photos sent to TV5 show at least two cars on their sides, with their load -- possibly soybeans or corn -- spilled along a grassy stretch near a road. One photo shows a severe bend to the tracks near where the cars flipped.

For a more detailed look into the damage, take a look through the photos in the slideshow to the left of this page.

No timeframe has been given for when the roadways will reopen.

    Train derails in downtown Lytle

    Updated 2:50 pm, Friday, May 3, 2013

Crews work to clean up a Union Pacific freight train crash that took place in downtown Lytle, Texas south of San Antonio Friday May 3, 2013. Lytle Police Lt. Matt Dear said the northbound train mostly had empty cars and there were no injuries. The cause of the accident is being investigated. Photo: JOHN DAVENPORT, SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS / ©San Antonio Express-News/Photo may be sold to the public

LYTLE — Twenty-six cars of a northbound Union Pacific train derailed Friday morning in downtown Lytle, a railroad official said.

No one was injured, and all the cars, which usually carry sand, were empty, said Raquel Espinoza-Williams, spokeswoman for Union Pacific.

The tracks are closed and UP crews will work overnight to replace about 400 feet of damaged rail. The line might reopen Saturday morning, she said.

It was the second derailment on the UP line to Lytle since October. That one involved three cars and also caused no injuries or evacuations.

UP had a crew working on replacing track somewhere north of Lytle Thursday, the spokeswoman said. Also within the last two weeks, crews were working on crossings in Lytle as part of a track replacement program between Gessner and Gardendale in LaSalle County, a 90-mile stretch and a busy area for fracking.

UP are investigating Friday's derailment. An investigator from the state Railroad Commission also was on the scene, because the cars went off the tracks close to a propane storage unit.

The train, with five locomotives and 101 cars, derailed on a street that runs parallel to Main Street.

About 8 a.m., a police officer came into the city's police station, about a quarter mile from the rail line, to tell Lytle Police Chief Richey Priest that some rail cars had run off the tracks.

“I thought he was joking,” Priest said, “and he wasn't.”

Among the businesses and homes that border the tracks is a propane company at Prairie and Railroad streets. The derailed cars grazed about 11 propane tanks, Priest said, which were empty. But they appear to have missed a propane filling station that can store more than 4,000 gallons of liquid propane, an employee with Lytle Propane said.

About 20 minutes after the derailment, the city sent a reverse 911 call to town residents telling them to evacuate, Priest said. Lytle Primary School had children loaded onto buses when officials determined the derailment didn't pose a danger. A second reverse 911 call went out, 20 minutes after the first, to cancel the evacuation order, Priest said.

The train was headed to San Antonio from Gardendale in La Salle County. Espinoza-Williams said she was not sure when the train left Gardendale.

The cause of the derailment is unknown.

By 11 a.m., spectators, some with cameras, have gathered around the tracks as trucks hauled away some of the damaged railcars.

Lytle Police Lt. Matt Dear said another work train was going to pull up next to the derailed train and remove the undamaged cars.

There were some traffic tieups Friday morning, Priest said, he doesn't expect any major problems until possibly this afternoon, when children leave school.

For now, he's just thankful the cars weren't carrying any hazardous materials.

Train derails into the Passumpsic River

    Posted: May 07, 2013 6:31 AM ADT Updated: May 07, 2013 11:41 AM ADT

    BARNET, Vt. -

Three freight cars will be pulled from the Passumpsic River Tuesday morning after derailing in East Barnet.

The cars went off the tracks near the Comerford Dam, and two cars are almost completely submerged. No one was hurt.

The cars were carrying feed grain for Washington County Railroad.

Vermont State Police say it appears the cars tumbled because of bank erosion.

    EAST BARNET, Vt. -

Heavy machinery pushes gravel along a blown out section of track in East Barnet. Other crews work to shore up the bank of the rail line which parallels the Passumpsic River. This section of the track failed Monday night, causing the freight train to derail.

"The tail four cars derailed. We got three over the bank and one still on top," said Shane Filskov of the Vermont Rail System.

The Washington County Railroad train was headed south from Newport, its cars loaded with corn. No one was injured during the accident. Angie Nelson was watching TV in her nearby apartment as first responders raced to the scene.

"There was a fire truck in the back of our yard in the field over there, and then there was another fire truck that went zooming down past and we were like, what the heck is going on? We all came out and looked around and were like, we don't smell any smoke, we don't see any fire," Nelson said.

At this time, crews are still working to figure out why the tracks gave way. Getting the line back up and running was the priority Tuesday afternoon.

"The cause is still under investigation; it will take some time for us to figure it out," Filskov said.

The cars rest partially submerged just south of the Comerford Dam. It's the same section of river that recently claimed the life of a boater. Throughout the day Tuesday, interested bystanders stopped by to check out the scene.

Reporter Adam Sullivan: You don't get this too often around here do you?

Angie Nelson: No, a little out in the boonies.

Train officials are currently developing a game plan to get the three cars out of the river and up the bank. However, they say that process could take several days.

Repairs to the bank and tracks are expected to be completed Tuesday evening. Railway officials say that will allow them to begin off-loading the corn over the next few days in preparation for removing the cars from the river.

US derailment: 'Extensive damage', says Gov Malloy [BBC News; 18 May 2013]

Dozens injured in US train crash [BBC News; 18 May 2013]

Some 60 people have been injured, five critically, after a head-on, rush-hour collision between two commuter trains near New York City, officials say.

About 250 people were on the trains involved in Friday evening's crash. No fatalities have been reported.

Officials said a train that left New York City's Grand Central station en route to New Haven, Connecticut, derailed then was hit by another train.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy said the front of one of the trains had been extensively damaged and its wheels were "sticking into the other train".

One of the five people with the most serious injuries was described as being in a "very critical" condition.

Amtrak has suspended its service between New York and Boston.

Metro-North Railroad described it as a "major derailment", just outside Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy said the front of one of the trains had been extensively damaged and its wheels were "sticking into the other train".

One of the five people with the most serious injuries was described as being in a "very critical" condition.

Investigators are trying to find out what caused the crash, which came shortly after 18:00 local time (22:00 GMT).

Gov Malloy said he had no reason to believe it was anything other than an accident.

Bridgeport Police Chief Joseph Gaudett said most of those hurt were walking wounded.

"Everybody seemed pretty calm," he told the Associated Press. "Everybody was thankful they didn't get seriously hurt. They were anxious to get home to their families."

But Canadian passenger Alex Cohen told NBC Connecticut that "people were screaming... they had to smash a window to get us out".

One witness, Brian Alvarez, told CNN: "I saw this one car and it was completely destroyed and they were pulling people out of the car. They were all bloody."

Derailed Saskatchewan train spills more than 91,000 litres of oil

Crews work to clean up five Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. tankers containing oils that derailed near Jansen, Sask., on May 21, 2013. (LIAM RICHARDS/THE CANADIAN PRESS)

A freight train jumped the tracks in southeastern Saskatchewan Tuesday and spilled more than 91,000 litres of oil.

The accident happened as the Canadian Pacific Rail eastbound train was rolling through an area near the village of Jansen, about 150 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon.

The company said five cars derailed, but only one leaked its contents. A total of 575 barrels hit the ground, said spokesman Ed Greenberg.

“There is one car that was leaking product,” Mr. Greenberg said. “It has been contained into the area around the car.”

The leaking car was well back in the 64-unit train and remained upright. The other four cars were on their sides.

Excavation equipment was being sent to the site to build a wall of dirt to further contain the spill.

Reeve Bruce Elke with the rural municipality of Jansen was content with the way the situation was being handled, although he noted he was seeding his farmland and had not been to the scene.

“My understanding was that it wasn’t that big a spill and everything is going well,” Mr. Elke said.

Oil spills of any sort have been increasingly under the microscope as debate rages over how best to get Canadian oil to foreign markets.

CP Rail has been increasing crude shipments as production ramps up from the oilsands and pipeline companies struggle to increase capacity quickly. Canadian National Railway moved more than 30,000 carloads of crude to various North American markets last year and believes it can double that business in 2013.

However, in New York earlier this month, Prime Minister Stephen Harper suggested rail was a riskier way to go while stumping for U.S. approval of the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to the Gulf Coast.

Tuesday’s spill marked at least the third involving a CP train in the last few months.

In April, about 20 freight cars, including two that were carrying light sweet crude oil, went off the tracks near White River, Ont., about halfway between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. While it was initially thought that only 630 litres of oil leaked, the total was revised to about 63,000 litres.

In March, a Canadian Pacific train derailed in Minnesota. At the time, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said 76,000 litres leaked onto the still-frozen ground.

In January a Canadian National train collided with a road grader near the community of Paynton in Saskatchewan. Police said at the time that about 1,000 litres of oil leaked from two tankers in that crash.

Mr. Greenberg said the train that detailed Tuesday was carrying other products besides oil, but there was no indication they were hazardous.

“It was a mixed freight train, so there were other rail cars with other commodities on it.”

Firefighters from Jansen were called in as a precaution.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada was sending an investigator to the site.

Flood derails train; Charles City flood warnings remain in place

    Posted: Wednesday, May 22, 2013 8:47 am | Updated: 9:31 am, Wed May 22, 2013.

HOUSTON, Minn. — Even as high rivers started to recede in southeastern Minnesota, flooding caused a train to derail near Charles City, Iowa, late on Monday.

Rescuers called to the scene found the train's engineer and conductor atop one of the derailed locomotives in an area surrounded by rising floodwaters.

No one was injured in the derailment of the Canadian Pacific train.

Railroad spokesman Ed Greenberg says the derailment was caused by a washed-out rail line. Five cars — four of them carrying ethanol — derailed.

Railroad inspectors initially reported none of the ethanol leaked, but Tuesday night the Iowa Department of Natural Resources confirmed ethanol and diesel were leaking into the Little Cedar River.

The DNR says one of the ethanol cars has been punctured, resulting in a slow leak.

Meanwhile, flood warnings remain in place from the National Weather Service today for two southeastern Minnesota rivers after spring storms inundated the area with rain, though projected water levels are expected to fall steadily through the weekend.

The Root River in Houston County rose nearly nine feet after the recent storm, but it peaked Tuesday night at 16.42 feet; 17 feet is considered moderate flood stage. It had dropped to 14.71 feet as of Wednesday morning, which is still considered minor flood stage, but is projected to fall back to around seven feet by Sunday.

The water level of the Trempealeau River in Dodge County peaked Wednesday morning at 9.19 feet, which is just above what the service considered minor flooding. That marks an increase of three feet since Sunday night as thunderstorm ripped through the area. However, that river is expected to fall to around eight feet by Thursday morning before dropping below the "action" stage on Friday.

Rochester received a record rainfall of 2.07 inches Sunday, which nearly doubled the previous high on that date of 1.20 inches from 1959. Dover got 2.65 inches of rain, and Altura got 2.29.

This spring is already the wettest recorded in Rochester. The weather service said the 15.89 inches through Friday topped the previous record of 15.87 inches in March, April and May of 2001.

    * 7 injured in Mo. train collision, overpass collapse [USA Today; 25 May 2013]

Two vehicles crashed after coming upon the bridge after it had fallen.

Two freight trains collided early Saturday morning, collapsing a highway overpass near Chaffee, Mo.

    (Photo: Cape Girardeau Fire Department)

One of the drivers, Christopher Cantrell, 22, said he didn't see the bridge had collapsed until it was too late.

All seven of the victims were treated and released by Saturday afternoon, Saint Francis Medical Center spokeswoman Felecia Blanton told the Associated Press.

Blanton said when she heard about the crash, she immediately went online and saw video footage of the scene and was bracing for the worst. She said it was "a real blessing" that the injuries were relatively minor, the most serious being a fracture.

"If you look at the pictures, they're very dramatic, and there are no serious injuries," she said. "So it's amazing."

Wayne Woods, a bystander who rushed to the scene of the crash, said, "I heard the crash and stepped outside, and my son said the overpass was down. Then we heard car's tires squealing like it was coming to a stop and a crash, and a horn continuously blowing ... When I got over there, the train was on its side."

At least a dozen Union Pacific train cars and a dozen Burlington Northern cars derailed in the accident.

The Union Pacific train was hauling auto parts from Salem, Ill., to Arlington, Texas, according to Union Pacific spokewoman Calli Hite. The Burlington Northern train was hauling scrap metal, BNSF spokesman Andy Williams said.

The crash also ignited a fire that crews were able to extinguish quickly. The National Transportation Safety Board has been dispatched a team to investigate the incident.

The collision comes just two days after a span of an Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River in Washington collapsed — caused when an oversized truck hit an overhead girder — and just over a week after a commuter train derailed in Bridgeport, Conn., suspending rail service along the heavily traveled New York-Boston corridor.

    * NTSB investigating cause of SE Mo. train crash - Yahoo! News [Yahoo! News; 25 May 2013]

CHAFFEE, Mo. (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the cause of a cargo train collision that partially collapsed a highway overpass in southeast Missouri, injuring seven people.

The collision occurred about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when a Union Pacific train hit a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train at a rail intersection under a highway near Chaffee, a town of about 3,000 southwest of Cape Girardeau.

Scott County Sheriff's Office Dispatcher Clay Slipis said several cars derailed and hit a pillar of the Highway M overpass, bringing it down. Two cars were on the overpass when it fell. The highway was shut down for about 8 miles from Scott City to Chaffee.

Seven people — five in the vehicles and a UP train conductor and engineer — were taken to a hospital. Slipis said all but one was treated and released; the seventh is in good condition.

A diesel fire that broke out after the collision was quickly extinguished, Slipis said.

BNSF spokesman Andy Williams said the 75-car BNSF train, which was carrying scrap metal, was hit by the Union Pacific train about eight cars back from the locomotive. He said 12 cars on the BNSF train derailed.

"Our crew was not impacted," Williams said.

Union Pacific spokeswoman Calli Hite said the 60-car UP train was carrying primarily automobiles or auto parts from Illinois to Texas. She said about a dozen UP railcars derailed.

Hite said the NTSB will determine what caused the accident, and that there was no immediate estimate on the amount of damage to the roadway or the rail cars.

"We have no indication as to cause of the incident, but that will be handled by the NTSB," Hite said.

Williams said cleanup had not yet begun at mid-day Saturday because crews were waiting for the NTSB to arrive.

"We are fully cooperating with the NTSB, and we have to defer to their timeline," Hite said.

15 Freight Train Cars Derail in Maryland, One Person Injured (May 28)

Train derails near Baltimore: A large plume of smoke can be seen rising from the scene.
Fifteen freight train cars derailed in an industrial area of Maryland this afternoon causing an explosion, the collapse of several buildings and leaving one person in serious condition, according to authorities.
The CSX train derailed in the White Marsh area around 2 p.m., according to officials.
"Several buildings collapsed at the site of the train derailment," Baltimore County public safety information specialist Louise Feher told ABCNews.com.

An overturned garbage truck could be seen at the scene and the driver was the injured person, according to the Baltimore County Police and Fire Department. The truck driver was removed from the truck and taken to a hospital. The driver is in serious but stable conditions, authorities said.

The train and truck collided, but officials have not yet provided details on the collision or whether the collision caused the derailment.

Two CSX train employees were not injured, officials said.

"There was an explosion and there was smoke," she said. Officials do not yet know the cause of the explosion. It was not immediately known what the train was hauling. Feher said fire units and hazmat officials were on the scene, although officials said there were no hazardous materials involved.

Aerial footage showed a thick cloud of black smoke billowing from the scene and 15 train cars that had come off of the rails. Two cars were burning.

The 20-block area around the derailed train has been evacuated, officials said. Nearby Pulaski Highway has been closed in both directions.

Witnesses in the area told ABC News' Baltimore affiliate WMAR-TV that businesses near the scene shook and "mushroom cloud" could be seen.
The derailment is the third serious one this month. In Bridgeport, Conn., on May 17, more than 70 people were injured when a commuter train derailed. The eastbound train from New York City went off the tracks during evening rush hour, came to a stop and was struck about 20 seconds later by a westbound train.

Two wheels on the lead subway car jumped their track about 5:50 p.m., disabling the southbound train a few blocks south of the above-ground W. 125th St. station.

“We heard a loud bang, like a bomb,” said Jessica Martinez, 24, a nanny from Washington Heights. “The train just stopped. I was so anxious I was light-headed. I avoid trains at all costs.”

There were no injuries, the MTA said. But there were plenty of disgruntled commuters. Passengers on the stopped train were stuck for more than a hour and service on the line was suspended in both directions between 96th St. and 137th St.

“It just stopped and the power went off,” said Aricia Glenn, 42, a Manhattan social worker.

“Everything shut down. It was really hot. It was smelly.”

MTA officials dispatched a “rescue train” to help the approximately 400 stranded straphangers, who walked through their train and then through the rescue train to reach the station platform.

Officials said the cause of the derailment was unknown.

No. 2 and No. 3 trains were running local service between Chambers and 96th streets after the incident Wednesday, and the MTA was advising upper-Manhattan-bound customers to take the A or C trains from 59th St. to 168th St.

Officials gave no timetable on the restoration of normal service, citing extensive damage to protection boards and the third rail.

There have been five derailments since April 2011, according to an MTA report.

The incident Wednesday followed more serious derailments in Maryland Tuesday and in Connecticut earlier this month.

    Train derails in Ogden

Posted on: 4:54 pm, May 29, 2013, by FOX 13 News

OGDEN – At least five Union Pacific rail cars derailed Wednesday around 8:30 a.m. in Ogden.

The trains derailed at the intersection of Pacific and Patterson avenues in the Union Pacific rail yard.

A few of the rail cars of the train fell on their sides, and neighbors told Fox 13 it sounded like a bomb went off.

Trey Tilman said he and others in the area rushed to see what the commotion was about.

“We just heard some loud noises, and then we just came out, seen this thing was flipped over and whole bunch of people just came running around,” he said. “I don’t know, I just saw a whole bunch of dust when we came out. We thought it was something like crashed or hit it.”

The rail cars were carrying new automobiles from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Salt Lake City.

No one was injured, and the derailment did not block the intersection. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

A train towing another train derailed Wednesday at Agege, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

The incident, which happened at a point where the rail line is damaged, did not result in any casualty as the trains were not conveying passengers.

They were heading toward Ijoko in Ogun State in the morning when the incident happened.

An eyewitness who identified himself as Ola Sunday, said the point where the accident occurred had been bad for long but the authorities of the Nigeria Railway Corporation did not fix it.

Another eyewitness said she heard a loud explosion and later discovered that the sound came from the derailed trains.

Cleanup ongoing after train carrying road salt derails in Wheatland

    Jun. 4, 2013

A train carrying road salt derailed about 9:15 p.m. Monday in the area of 1647 Wheatland Center Road, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. / Tina Yee/Staff Photographer

For more than 110 years, Genesee & Wyoming trains have hauled away the rock salt dug from the earth under Livingston County.

Monday night, one of their salt trains left the tracks.

No one was injured in the derailment, which occurred about 9:15 pm Monday just east of the crossing at Wheatland Center Road in Wheatland.

But 20 hopper cars filled with salt from the American Rock Salt mine in Groveland left the rails. Both the rail line and the road remained closed Tuesday as crews began cleanup.

“We don’t know the cause yet. There should be no impact to the public, and no environmental impact,” said Michael Williams, a spokesman for Genesee & Wyoming Inc., which has offices in the Rochester area but is headquartered in Connecticut.

Cleanup of the salt was proceeding well, Williams said late Tuesday afternoon.

Just 5 to 10 tons of salt had spilled from five of the derailed cars, according to state Department of Environmental Conservation officials at the scene Tuesday.

One hopper can hold 80 to 100 tons of salt.

Oatka Creek is 300 to 400 yards north of the derailment site, far enough away that the salt “does not present a significant environmental concern,” DEC spokeswoman Kristen Davidson said.

She said the hopper cars would have to be emptied before the cars can be removed, with the salt probably loaded into trucks and hauled away.

The 69-car salt train was operated by Rochester & Southern Railroad, a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming. Genesee & Wyoming has grown from a short line carrying product from the now-closed salt mine in Retsof into a with 111 railroads on three continents.

Williams said the company had informed customers that the rail line in Wheatland would be blocked by cleanup and repair for about 72 hours.

Monroe County sheriff’s spokesman Cpl. John Helfer said Tuesday afternoon that deputies expected Wheatland Center Road to be closed until at least late Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

Federal Railroad Administration records show this to be the sixth derailment of a Rochester & Southern train since 2001, with at least two of them involving cars carrying rock salt.

FRIONA, Texas — A rail line in the Texas Panhandle has reopened after storms packing winds strong enough to form a tornado overturned more than 40 BNSF Railway cars.

BNSF spokesman Joe Faust said Tuesday nobody was hurt in the derailment between Friona and Summerfield.

Faust said 47 cars, some empty, derailed before dawn Monday. He said 42 cars ended up on their sides. No cargo spilled from the 71-car train traveling from Clovis, N.M., to Amarillo. BNSF reopened the line at about midnight Monday.

Collapsing Bridge in Calgary Derails Train, Threatens to Submerge Rail Cars in Bow River - June 27

A train has derailed on a Calgary rail bridge that is collapsing, threatening to send five rail cars carrying a diesel-like substance into the Bow River, acting Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc said Thursday.

Emergency management director Bruce Burrell says the cars are not leaking, but the bridge is failing and slowly sagging into the river.

"The bridge is continuing to drop as we speak, so that distance between the failure point and where the bridge decking is, is starting to open up more," he said.

"It appears that the bridge is failing."

The train derailed after a section of the bridge dropped two feet (60 centimeters) Thursday morning. Emergency management director Bruce Burrell the bridge is not in the water but is slowly sagging into the river.

Each car could have 80,000 pounds (36,000 kilograms) of flammable product, said Uzeloc, adding that he could not specify the liquid. A sixth car on the bridge is an empty oil tanker, he said.

Canadian Pacific spokesman Ed Greenberg said the bridge gave way after most of the eastbound train had crossed.

"The (derailed cars) are all upright," he said. "There are no leaks reported and no injuries reported as a result of the incident."

The bridge, southeast of downtown Calgary, typically sits about 25 feet (7.6 meters) above water level, though water levels remain high after last week's flood.

Emergency crews are working to string a cable through the railcars to secure it to bulldozers on land to prevent the cars from being carried down the river in case the bridge gives way.

Uzeloc said crews then hope to pull another train along a parallel bridge so the cargo can be pumped off and the empty cars can be removed with a crane.

"The thing we want to do is secure the cars. The last thing we want is these cars floating down the river and causing problems downstream," Uzeloc said.

Booms are being deployed down river in case of any spills.

Both the Bow and Elbow rivers that run through Calgary burst their banks when heavy rain pounded southern regions of Alberta last week.

Canadian Pacific said the bridge was inspected by a qualified inspector on Saturday and the track was inspected on Monday. Additional inspections were scheduled.

Officials said it was too early to say whether the structural failure was specifically due to flooding.

    Train wreck leaves a mess

No serious injuries or spills in Fonda-area derailment; cause still undetermined
    Updated 9:51 pm, Thursday, June 27, 2013

    Mohawk

A corner of Montgomery County came to a standstill Thursday after a freight train derailment along a busy Mohawk Valley corridor blocked a section of Route 5, affectedAmtrak passenger service and brought a personal visit from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Two trains coming from opposite directions sideswiped each other for an as yet undetermined reason at about 8 a.m., CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan said.

A conductor and engineer suffered minor injuries at the scene, which left several rail cars carrying dry goods, lumber, garbage and other cargo sheared and crumpled, officials said.

In one case a tanker rammed a boxcar, part of which landed on Route 5.

A hazardous-materials team was at the scene but nothing leaked from the hazardous-material cars, which were still upright, stateDepartment of Environmental Conservation spokesman Rick Georgeson said.

Sullivan said some diesel fuel leaked from the locomotives. Georgeson said it didn't appear that fuel had reached the nearby Mohawk River, though absorbent booms were placed in the river as a precaution. He also said a fuel additive residue car came to rest on its side, but it didn't appear to be leaking.

Montgomery County Sheriff Michael Amato said a switch on the tracks may be to blame for the derailment.

"I'm not sure how they sideswiped. I think there is a change to the other track," he said.

Cuomo, coming in from Utica, stopped at the scene in the late afternoon to survey the damage. Standing a few feet from bags of spilled food on the Route 5 and Martin Road intersection, the governor said the state response includes the DEC and State Police, but said the removal operation is primarily a private one.

He said assumptions shouldn't be made before a cause is found.

Cuomo expressed relief that despite the "tremendous damage" there was no serious injury, and amazement at how the trains can get tossed around.

Scores of CSX workers and contractors using large equipment worked steadily. The sheriff said CSX officials told authorities they hoped to have the train car removed from Route 5 by Thursday night. But the state Department of Transportation will have to examine the pavement before deciding if the road needs repair. At least a couple of dozen people live along the 12-mile stretch of Route 5 from Route 334 in Mohawk to Route 10 in Palatine that was closed off, Amato said Just when the traffic will return to normal was unclear.

A total of about 45 cars and four locomotives derailed, CSX's Sullivan said.

One train was headed east from Avon, Ind., to Selkirk and the other was traveling west from Selkirk to New Castle, Pa., at the time of the accident, Sullivan said. The eastbound train was hauling four locomotives and 126 freight cars, while the westbound train had two locomotives and 83 freight cars.

Amtrak posted an early-evening advisory on its website:

Empire Service trains will run Friday with alternate transportation to points west of Albany with these exceptions:

Train 280 – cancelled between Niagara Falls and Albany; no alternate transportation.

Train 283 – cancelled between Albany and Niagara Falls; no alternate transportation.

Empire Service between New York Penn Station and Albany will operate on a normal Friday schedule. Lake Shore Limited (between Chicago and New York) will run with alternate transportation provided between Buffalo and Albany, the advisory said.

The route sees as many as 60 freight trains a day. Sheriff Amato said trains run through the area at a rate of one every 10 or 15 minutes.

Delaware State Police are investigating a Norfolk Southern freight train derailment north of Millsboro early this morning.

It happened on the railroad tracks between West State Street and Patriots Way at 4 a.m.

About 70 train cars hauling stone were being pulled by two locomotives and were traveling south on the tracks in a wooded area north of Millsboro, Sgt. Paul G. Shavack said in a release.

He said a preliminary investigation indicates that the derailment happened on a section of the tracks east of U.S. 113. The tracks run parallel with the highway between West State Street and Patriots Way.

Shavack said 15 of the cars were forced off the tracks and spilled stone as a result of the derailment, while the rest remained upright. He said the two locomotives derailed but remained upright as well.

The train conductor and engineer were not injured, he said.

About a three-quarter mile length of track was destroyed or heavily damaged, Shavack said, but there are no threats to the environment or surrounding community due to the derailment, and roads remain open in the area.

State police and Norfolk Southern officials are continuing to investigate the derailment.

Cause of Hays train derailment/fire under investigation

Update - 8:45 am:  Authorities say the investigation into a train derailment in Hays this morning will be handled by Union Pacific police.

Crews are still on the scene battling the fire.

Right now, their primary concern is keeping the diesel fuel contained so it does not get into the water supply.  They are still urging residents to conserve water to help free up resources so crews can continue to fight the fire.

Drivers are also urged to avoid the area around the fire.

More than a dozen people from a mobile home park across the street have been evacuated.  They will remain out of their homes at least until the fire is out.

    No injuries have been reported.

    ------------

Authorities in Hays say a dozen train cars derailed and caught fire at 8th and Vine overnight.  Those cars are carrying general cargo and freight.

The train was also hauling 20 cars of ethanol, but officials say those are still upright and on the tracks.

Two of the three locomotives caught fire, causing a massive fire which crews are still on the scene battling.

Due to the large amount of water needed to fight the fire, citizens in Hays are asked to conserve water and refrain from any outdoor watering until further notice.

Citizens are also asked to avoid the area of Highway bypass to 10th and Highway bypass to 10th and Highway bypass to Riley Street.  Non-emergency personnel will not be allowed in the area.

Eyewitness Susan Moss tells us the fiery crash happened around 1:15 Tuesday morning just east of 8th and Vine. Moss says she heard screeching and the train horns going off before it hit a vehicle and burst into flames.

Reporter Heather Williams is on the scene. She says hazmat crews are on scene working to control the fire. Both Williams and Moss say you can still smell fuel burning for miles.

So far there are no reports of any injuries.

Crews from Ellis County, Victoria, and Ellis are helping put the fire out.

    Train derailment leaves 23 injured

Foreign nationals were among the 23 passengers injured when a Chiang Mai-bound train derailed in Phrae province early on Wednesday morning.

The passengers were sleeping when the train's seven compartments toppled over onto their sides in Denchai district at about 3am.

Eighteen foreign tourists, among them residents of Australia, France, Spain, Japan and the United States, suffered minor injuries, including those from and the United States.

The overnight sleeper express train had about 300 passengers on board when the accident took place.

"Derailments happen quite often," said State Railway of Thailand governor Prapat Chongsanguan.

    The tracks were undergoing upgrading.

Buses and vans were mobilised to transport affected passengers, local and foreign, from Denchai to Chiang Mai. Three foreigners suffered broken arms and 24 passengers had minor injuries. They were sent to the district hospital.

Chalermwoot Rakkhatiwong, Denchai district chief, said all passengers have been transferred from the scene.

The train left Bangkok at 7pm on July 16.

The accident has resulted in suspension of the northbound trains and a change in schedules. Express trains scheduled to run today between Bangkok and Chiang Mai have been cancelled. Normal trains from Chiang Mai will operate as usual, but passengers in Chiang Mai, Lamphun and Lampang will have to take buses to board the train at Uttaradit station. Affected passengers can return tickets and receive full compensation.

Metro-North Hudson line suspended, freight train derails

    Updated at 11:03 PM today

Metro-North's Hudson line service is suspended due to a freight train derailment in the Bronx.

The freight train derailed on the Metro-North tracks near the Spuyten Duyvil train station.

Hudson Line service has been suspended in both directions.

10 of the 24 cars on the freight train derailed just east of the station behind Kennedy High School. The train is still upright but blocking both tracks that run through the area.

The train picked up garbage from the Oak Point Yard in the Bronx, which is a CSX freight railroad yard used for local deliveries. It was heading northbound when it derailed.

There was a conductor, engineer and break man on the train at the time of the derailment. None of them were injured.

This was not a passenger train.

The Friday morning commute will be affected by the derailment.

Buses are bridging service between the Marble Hill and Riverdale train stations in the Bronx. Customers going north will take a train from Grand Central to Marble Hill, take a bus from there to Riverdale, and then board another train from Riverdale north.

Customers going to Grand Central will get off at Riverdale, take a bus to Marble Hill, and then take another train to Grand Central.

Metro-North says this is most likely how the morning commute will run. They are advising customers coming into Manhattan Friday morning to either take the Harlem Line, or a 1 train to the West Side from Marble Hill.

Metro-North says this derailment happened in the worst place possible, in an area known as the "rock cut." When the tracks were built, crews had to blast the cliff and built only two tracks through the area.

The Hudson Line goes from four tracks to two in the rock cut and then back to four tracks. There are cliff walls on both sides. It is an area that is very hard to get to and the process of moving the train will be long and tedious.

At least 35 people have been killed after a train derailed outside the northern Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela, according to state media and eyewitnesses.

Train carriages lay on their sides with smoke billowing from the wreckage, photographs published on the Voz de Galicia newspaper website showed.

The head of Spain's Galicia region said that at least 35 people had been killed in the train derailment, although it was too soon to say what had caused the accident.

Eyewitnesses said that the derailed train, which was reportedly carrying 240 passengers when the accident happened, had caught fire after the crash.

"It was going so quickly … It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the wagons piled up one on top of the other," passenger Ricardo Montesco told Cadena Ser radio station.

"A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the wagons to get out and we realised the train was burning … I was in the second wagon and there was fire … I saw corpses," he added.

Another witness told the station they had heard an explosion before seeing the derailed train.

The Spanish government's main working hypothesis concerning the derailment is that it was an accident, a government spokeswoman said.

Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy was due to visit the site of the derailment, on the outskirts of the city of Santiago de Compostela on Thursday morning, she said.

"Rajoy is in an emergency meeting with the deputy prime minister, the interior minister and the public works minister," she said. "He will visit the site tomorrow morning."

Santiago de Compostela, the birthplace of Rajoy, is best known as the destination of an ancient Catholic pilgrimage route.

The train was coming into the port at 1 a.m. when it left the tracks, pulling twelve cars off of the rails -- and sending ten of those completely onto their sides, according to Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Lonnie Benniefield.

Responders found three of the cars leaking ethanol, a flammable liquid that's often mixed with gasoline to fuel cars and trucks. When it's shipped by rail, ethanol is usually stored in a form that is more flammable than gasoline.

Hazmat-trained firefighters have laid down a coating of firefighting foam on top of the spill to keep it from catching fire.

The toppled train is blocking the main entrance to the Port of Tampa on Maritime Boulevard, and that may be the case for several hours. Trucks were allowed to use a side road to access the port starting at around 9 a.m.

Benniefield said equipment to place the rail cars back on the tracks is being sent from Atlanta to Tampa by railroad company CSX; righting the entire train could take until late Thursday night or some time Friday morning.

No one was hurt in the train derailment, which was originally reported as involving 15 cars. Benniefield said it's not clear yet why the train jumped the tracks. CSX and government agencies are expected to investigate the cause.

Typically, ethanol breaks down within a few weeks in the environment, so the impact to the soil and groundwater may be limited and not serious.

LAHORE: At least two people were killed and several injured Thursday evening when a Rawalpindi-bound train derailed from its track near Gujranwala.

According to reports, four bogies of the train travelling from Lahore to Rawalpindi derailed near the Gujranwala City Railway Station, killing two people and injuring several others standing on the roadside.

The dead included a woman and a child.

Deputy Superintendent of Railways Humayun told reporters that the accident took place after the train failed to stop at its designated location.

Dildar Hussain Shah, a Pakistan Railways official, said the driver of the railcar failed to control the train and it rolled over a safety hump which was made for avoiding such accidents.

Hussain said no train passenger was hurt while two local people sitting on the hump reportedly died.

Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique has sought an inquiry report into the train accident within 24 hours.

Earlier this month, fourteen members of an extended family were killed when a speeding train hit a motorcycle rickshaw at an unmanned level-crossing near Khanpur village, about 50 kilometres from Gujranwala.

In one of the worst railway accidents in the country's history, three passenger trains collided on July 13, 2005 at the Sarhad Railway Station near Ghotki, resulting in deaths of over 150 people.

Railway authorities had said one of the trains failed to stop after the driver misread the signal, resulting in the massive triple-train collision.

On January 3, 1990, around 350 people were killed in an accident at Sangi, some 15km from Sukkur, which is said to be the biggest ever train accident in Pakistan.

Service on the Camden and Brunswick lines will be disrupted Monday, MARC officials said, after a CSX freight train partially derailed in Southwest Baltimore on Sunday morning.

Eight cars of a CSX freight train derailed at about 10:15 a.m. in Southwest Baltimore near Hollins Ferry Road and Paca Street.

The train that was traveling from Hamlet, N.C., to Selkirk, N.Y., with 118 cars, was pulled by two diesel locomotives.

The rail cars appeared to have jackknifed, with at least one resting on its side Sunday afternoon.

According to Lt. Sterling Bailey, a Baltimore Fire Department spokesperson, the cars carried no hazardous materials, which CSX officials confirmed.

"There were also no injuries," Bailey said.

The Camden line will be on an "S" schedule Monday, MARC officials said. Service on the Penn Line will not be affected.

"The derailment means there will be no service to Camden Station," MARC officials said in a statement. "Trains will originate at Dorsey, and those scheduled to stop at St. Denis will stop. We are working to establish a bus bridge between Camden and Dorsey, however we recommend that Camden Station passengers use the light rail to Penn Station."

CSX has crews on the way to clear the scene. The cause is under investigation, according to Robert T. Sullivan, a CSX spokesman.

Train Derails in La., About 50 Homes Evacuated

LAWTELL, La. August 5, 2013 (AP)

A train carrying flammable and corrosive materials derailed in Louisiana on Sunday and about 50 homes have been evacuated as a precaution, authorities said.

Master Trooper Daniel "Scott" Moreau said three cars were leaking but the amount is so small air pollution detectors have not picked up anything. Authorities have not reported any injuries.

The evacuated homes were within one mile of the derailment. Police said at least 26 cars went off the tracks about 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Latwell, which is about 60 miles west of Baton Rouge.

Gov. Bobby Jindal was expected to talk to reporters Sunday night.

The Union Pacific train had 76 cars, and some of them held lube oil and vinyl chloride, KATC-TV reported (http://bit.ly/14Xi9NA).

Traffic was being diverted away from the evacuation zone. Moreau says it's not clear how long the evacuation will last.

    Express train derails in Thailand

An express train derailed today in a 382m-long tunnel while heading for northern Thai tourist town of Chiang Mai with 415 passengers on board, many of them foreigners.

Nobody was hurt in the accident at 3 am (local time) which has blocked all Bangkok- and Chiang Mai-bound trains.

The Chiang Mai-bound special express train derailed in the 382m-long tunnel between Ban Pang Ton Phueng station in Muang district of Uttaradit province and Huay Rai station of Phrae's Den Chai district, Poonsawat Im-emchai, the chief of Sila-at railway station, said.

Several buses were arranged for the passengers to proceed with their trips to Chiang Mai and other destinations.

Deteriorated condition of the rail tracks was believed to cause the derailment, Bangkok Post said.

On June 17, a Bangkok-Chiang Mai express train had derailed.

    WAYNOKA, Oklahoma -

Emergency crews are on the scene of a train derailment near Waynoka, Oklahoma, Sunday morning.

At about 7:30 a.m. a BNSF train carrying consumer products derailed in the area of NS 330 and Comanche Rd., about two miles north and one mile east of Waynoka. The train was heading westbound to Los Angeles at the time.

Authorities say the train was going 56 mph when it derailed. The speed limit is 60 mph.

First responders on the scene say a total of 40 trailers of the train derailed, spilling beer and soda cans, as well as paper rolls all over the railway.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. (BNSF) is in charge of cleaning up the scene. The train was carrying "mixed freight," according to Joe Faust, Director of Public Relations for BNSF.

No injuries have been reported. The town of Waynoka was not evacuated, according to Woods County Sheriff Rudy Briggs Jr.

Faust says no roads or highways in the area were shut down as a result of the derailment. The railroad is expected to be back open 2 p.m. Monday.

    Train Derails in Minidoka County

MINIDOKA • A train partially derailed Sunday morning in Minidoka County near 800 East Road and Idaho 24 outside of Minidoka.
Eleven cars from the 63-car train left the tracks at 11:20 a.m. Sunday.
No one was injured, and no crossings were blocked, said Minidoka County Sheriff Eric Snarr.
The cause of the derailment had not been determined, Snarr said, but the engineer and conductor thought the train was dragging something when it reached the switch, causing those cars to catch and leave the tracks.
Cars were scattered on both sides of the tracks, and one tipped over and spilled lye, he said.
The train was en route from Salt Lake City to Oregon, said Union-Pacific Railroad spokesman Aaron Hunt.
One of the derailed cars was an empty tanker that usually carries anhydrous ammonia.
“That was definitely the car we were most focused on,” said Hunt.
The other cars were carrying mixed freight, including lumber, grain and potash.
“None of those spilled,” he said.
Union-Pacific has 800 miles of track and 1,000 employees in Idaho, Hunt said.
The clean-up process is now up to Union-Pacific Railroad. Snarr said law enforcement and fire department personnel left the scene within a few hours.

Mexican cargo train used by migrants derails, killing at least 5

    EPA

General view of the derailment of the cargo train called 'The Beast' in Huimanguillo, in the state of Tabasco, Mexico.

A freight train derailed in a remote area of the Mexican state of Tabasco early Sunday, killing at least five people and injuring at least 35 others, according to officials.

Of the injured, 16 people were seriously hurt, according to a tweet from Luis Felipe Puente, national coordinator for Mexico’s Civil Protection branch of the Secretariat of the Interior.

Local media reports said the death toll could be as high as 50, but that figure was not immediately confirmed by Mexican authorities.

The freight train, known as “La Bestia” — “The Beast” — crisscrosses Mexico from south to north. Migrants, primarily Central Americans, seeking illegal passage to the United States often jump aboard the train under the cover of darkness.

The train company and emergency crews were dispatching two cranes to help search for an undetermined number of victims trapped among the eight cars of the derailed train, officials told The Associated Press.

Federal and state authorities were at the scene, according to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, who tweeted his sympathies Sunday afternoon.

“My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident,” the tweet said.

The derailment reportedly occurred in a rural area near Huimanguillo in the southeastern state of Tabasco around 3am local time (4am ET) Sunday, near the border with the Mexican state of Veracruz, which is difficult to reach by vehicle.

At least 250 migrants were apparently on the train traveling north from the Guatemala border, Tabasco state Civil Protection chief Cesar Burelo Burelo told the AP.

All of the dead are non-Mexican and from different Central American nations, officials said.

The locomotive and the first car apparently did not overturn in the accident, and were later used to transport victims to the nearest medical facility in Veracruz, according to the AP.

Hard rainfall had evidently loosened the earth under the tracks and shifted the rails, officials told the AP.

Burelo told the AP eight cars had derailed, but authorities have yet to determine a cause.

Soldiers, marines and civilian emergency workers were attempting to enter the area, which ambulances could not access, the Red Cross told the AP. Officials were working to set up air or water links to the scene of the fatal derailment.

Eight cars of a CP Rail train derailed Wednesday at a rail yard in southeast Calgary.

The derailment occurred at a track along 19 Ave. and 15 Street in the Aylth railroads.

Company spokesman Ed Greenberg says there were no injuries and there was no leakage from the cars, which are lying on their sides at the Alyth Yard.

The cars were carrying a diluting agent used in oil pipelines.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said there was briefly a small evacuation of the immediate area but everyone has since been allowed to return home.

He said Blackfoot Trail, a major commuter route, would be closed overnight but crews were working to ensure it could be reopened by morning.

Evacuations took place between 13th and 15th street south of 9th Avenue.

Calgary Police Service Duty Inspector Leah Barber told CTV Calgary several tanker cars left the rail, before coming to a rest on their side.

Barber also said there are reports a hissing noise could be heard coming from several cars.

The derailment also closed 15 Street between 9 Ave., according to 660 News.

CP Rail official Ed Greenberg told CTV Calgary the derailment occurred while a northbound train was leaving the Alyth yard at 4:55 p.m.

Greenberg says the north-bound train was moving at a slow speed when the cars left the tracks Wednesday afternoon.

He says the company has launched an investigation to determine what happened.

    Virginia train derailment

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A CSX train derailed in Southampton County early Thursday morning, injuring a conductor and engineer and sparking a fire.

Maj. Gene Drewery with the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a call from CSX that a train derailed between the Dominion Power Plant and the Ashland Chemical Plant around 2:30 a.m.

Drewery said the train was slowing into the chemical plant when it derailed. There was a diesel fuel spill, but there was not a chemical spill. Two locomotives and nine cars were involved.

The crash also caused a large fire, which Drewery said spread to trees along the side of the tracks, but was later contained.

An engineer and a conductor were transported from the scene with injuries. "They were disoriented, our officers just opened the door and helped them get out of the train and get off because of the fire," Drewery said. One was treated at Southampton Memorial Hospital, and the other was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. They were released from the hospital Thursday.

Donald Case said he used to work for CSX and drove from Richmond to check on the crash. "It's a bad one. I mean the pictures I saw on the news this morning looked pretty rough. So I rode down there to see if I could see anything," Case said.

Case said he knows the two men who were on the train, and was thankful they were not seriously hurt. "They really are lucky. They could have been killed real easy," Case said.

The train is made up of 41 cars which were carrying mixed freight. The train originated in Portsmouth and was en route to Rocky Mount, N.C.

It was not clear Thursday afternoon when the track would reopen. Investigators said it could take weeks to determine the cause of the derailment.

    Train derails near Central City

CENTRAL CITY — An eastbound Union Pacific train headed from California to Chicago derailed near Central City at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

“There were no injuries,” said Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis. “The cause of the derailment is under investigation.”

All 42 cars that went off the tracks were flat cars loaded with ocean-going containers. Those containers had everything from electronics to batteries to apparel and other consumer goods loaded in them, Davis said.

“Crews worked throughout the night to move the rail cars off the tracks and to begin repairs,” Davis said.

Both tracks there were damaged. A total of 800 feet of rail had to be replaced on one track and 2,000 feet of rail needed to be replaced on the other, he said.

One track was expected to reopen at 5 p.m. Sunday. It’s unknown when the second track will reopen, Davis said.

As of late Sunday afternoon, 20 trains had been detoured to other routes around the damage. Another 40 trains sat idle waiting for the tracks to clear, he said.

The derailment occurred at Highway 30 and 21st Street.

Tajik passenger train crashes in Uzbekistan

    10 October 2013, 22:05 (GMT+05:00)

    Uzbekistan, Tashkent, Oct. 10 /Trend, D. Azizov/

About 30 people were injured because of the derailment of five coaches of a Tajik passenger train, which was passing through Uzbekistan's territory, a source in the Ozbekiston temir yollari (Uzbekistan Railways) told Trend on Thursday.

According to the representative of the railway company, five cars of the train that was on the Dushanbe-Kanibadam route derailed at low speeds in the Gallyaral district of Jizzakh oblast on Thursday at around 10:00.

According to preliminary reports, the victims of the accident did not get life-threatening injuries. All of them were taken to the local hospital, where they received the necessary medical assistance.

The Dushanbe-Kanibadam train connects Tajikistan's capital with the northern Sughd oblast of the republic.

But the most part of its route accounts for Uzbekistan, because there is not a direct railway between these parts of Tajikistan.

An investigation is underway at the scene of the accident.
